Full job description

Minimum of 2-4 years of splicing experience in telecommunications or utility industry.

The Fiber Splicer is responsible for the maintenance and installation of FTTP, FTTdp, FTTN/FTTLA projects. Willing to travel and be on call, self-motivated, team player and hard working. Salary is based on experience and qualifications.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Ability to prep and splice fiber via mechanical fusion methods
  • Ability to splice large count fibers via tube or ribbon method
  • Ability to access the fiber optic splicer enclosure and splice the necessary fibers directly from a ladder
  • Able to troubleshoot and repair problems utilizing optical test equipment such as OTDR, Fiber Identifier and Fiber Scope
  • Prep, tray, and splice fiber optic cable ranging from single fiber to 288 count as well as perform ring cut when needed
  • Perform testing and turn-ups of subscriber drops in both inside and outside plant environment
  • Perform power meter testing
  • All other duties as required

Education:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2-4 years of splicing experience in telecommunications or utility industry
  • Knowledge of operating and using fiber optic splice equipment
  • Knowledge of fiber optic theory which includes fiber loss, connector types and the different types of fibers

Technical Skills:

  • Ability to read splicing matrix and design drawings
  • Ability to utilize MS Excel or equivalent to document and retrieve splice information
  • Ability to operate a bucket truck

Soft Skills:

  • Highly organized and detail orientated
  • Ability to detect errors, determine causes, and make corrections as appropriate
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to comprehend, process and apply both verbal and written skills appropriate to the job

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass pre-employment screening that includes background and drug testing
  • Individuals must have a valid driver's license and driving record meeting the company policy conditions
  • Must be in good physical condition with the ability to stoop, crawl, bend at the knees and waist, squat and lift 50 lbs.; includes body weight, equipment, tools and boxes
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time on varied surfaces
  • May be required to work long and unpredictable hours
  • Position requires working outdoors in all types of weather
  • Ability to climb and work at elevations (e. g. from ladders, poles, lift trucks) exceeding 18 feet. Ability to work in confined spaces (e. g. attics, crawl spaces, utility holes)
