Job Title: French Summer Camp Counselor
Camp Dates: June 15, 2026 to August 7, 2026
Classification: Non Exempt
Employee Type: Full time Temporary (38.75+ hrs/week)
Grade Level: Preschool to 6th Grade
Direct Supervisor: Summer Camp Director
Location: Lower School, 1009 Heinz Ave., Berkeley, CA 94710

Minimum Educational Requirement: High School
Diploma or equivalent, 12+ early childhood education units to work on Preschool

Minimum Work Experience Requirement: At least 1 year working with children in a professional environment

Job Overview
The Summer Camp Counselor is responsible for creating a fun, welcoming learning environment for our Mini Camp during Le Camp D’Été, EB’s French Culture Camp. Counselors will also supervise morning and after care, lunches and recess.

Essential Functions

  • Provide active supervision of children throughout the camp day
  • Prepare for camp by leading pre-planned weekly themed fun activities for campers
  • Upkeep the physical environment of the camp classrooms and group spaces
  • Help facilitate naptime/find quiet activities for non-nappers
  • Identify and help address concerns or issues that need to be resolved in order to offer the highest quality care and services for the children
  • Distribute snacks during the afterschool program
  • Help facilitate camp dismissal
  • Communicate with parents as needed about individual campers
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Priority will be given to candidates available to work longer than three weeks.
  • Accompany campers on weekly off- campus field trips
  • Collaborate with Summer camp colleagues to facilitate activities and maintain a supportive, effective work environment
  • Arrive on time for scheduled shifts and adhere to program schedules and operational guidelines
  • Follow Licensing Guidelines for Preschool

Work Environment

This job operates in a childcare environment, both indoors and outdoors on campus. The position will interact with preschool and school aged children on a daily basis. Counselors may also escort students during camp field trips.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to climb stairs and lift 25 pounds frequently
  • Ability to balance, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, squat, grip, and grasp occasionally
  • Ability to aid children needing assistance, including lifting and changing diapers
  • Perform repetitive motions such as: typing, moving, and manipulating computer equipment
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally

Required Qualifications

  • At least one year experience working with children
  • Positive and outgoing personality, ready to lead and take initiative
  • Strong ability to effectively communicate with campers, parents, and colleagues via verbal and written correspondence
  • Experience with leading programs for groups of children
  • Strong enthusiasm for working with children
  • Ability to effectively engage and interact with children in a responsible and caring manner
  • Must possess some knowledge of age-appropriate activities for students, including: arts, crafts, and outdoor activities
  • Must be able to effectively collaborate with other camp colleagues to facilitate a positive and productive experience for the children.
  • Must have a patient, calm, and nurturing demeanor with children
  • Preferred knowledge of basic computer systems, including email and G Suite/Google Apps
  • Must be able to successfully pass State licensing and criminal background check and all pre – employment requirements
  • Must meet licensing requirements and possess 12 early childhood education units to work in Preschool
  • Must be 18 years old or older
  • Confident in facilitating active play and promoting positive, healthy behaviors.Able to work Monday through Friday during program hours, with varying shifts between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM.

Preferred Qualifications

  • French as a first language a plus
  • One year of prior experience working in a day camp preferred.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a temporary full-time non-exempt position. The camp will operate from Monday, June 15, 2026 and ending Friday, August 7, 2026. Hours of work and days are generally Monday through Friday, 8:20 am to 4:40pm or 9:30 am to 6:00 pm with a 45 minute lunch. Extended hours may be necessary as needed to cover staffing during camp hours.
