Retreat Center Housekeeper Position Description

Serenity Ridge Retreat Center is a Bön Buddhist, values-driven non-profit organization in Shipman, VA. We provide a supportive and nourishing environment for spiritual seekers and meditators from a wide variety of backgrounds by offering retreats of various lengths with deeply experienced teachers. We strive to treat our guests and each other with respect, attentiveness and compassion.

We seek a skilled person for a Housekeeping position. This person maintains the cleanliness of our accommodation building (guest rooms, bathrooms and common areas), as well as assists with cleaning and upkeep of other buildings. On an as-needed basis, the Housekeeper will assist our Facilities staff with light maintenance work, and the Facilities staff are available to support Housekeeping activities on an as-needed basis. During retreats, dishwashing or support in our kitchen may be added as time allows. Candidates must exhibit strong attention to detail and organizational skills, have good customer service skills, be able to communicate and work well with others..

The goal of this position is to ensure that the facilities are clean, safe, and welcoming so that our guests can fully enjoy their time at our Center.

Job Description: Retreat Center Housekeeper

Hours: 24 hours/week with additional hours available by mutual agreement. (Work takes place during normal business hours, M-F 9am-5pm, with some weekend work)

Pay Range: $15-$17/hr

Other Benefits: Accrued Vac + Sick, time based on hours worked. Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas are paid holidays based on hours worked. Attendance at retreats and events that meet the written criteria as described in the Serenity Ridge Employee Manual.

Reports to: Serenity Ridge Retreat Center Administrator

Primary Responsibilities

  • Ensure the cleanliness of all community buildings throughout the center complex
  • Following the housekeeping plan, including protocols, schedules, and tasks (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually), including:
  • Cleaning of all guest rooms, bathrooms and common areas
  • Cleaning and preparing facilities for retreats
  • Cleaning facilities after retreats
  • Replace lightbulbs
  • Resolving housekeeping issues and special requests during retreats
  • Performing ongoing deep cleaning and organizational projects between retreats
  • Maintaining housekeeping inventory, making purchase orders, and distributing inventory orders related to housekeeping
  • Reporting any needed repairs to the Facilities Associate, other than those listed below in ‘Retreat Center Light Maintenance’
  • Maintain supply storage areas, including laundry storage, in a neat and clean manner
  • Maintain housekeeping equipment and communicate the need for repair or replacement with the Operations Manager
  • Clean linens as needed and schedule linen pick up and delivery with the outside service provider (includes bedding, curtains, shower curtains, door hangings etc.)
  • Handling various cleaning products in the correct way set forth by the Operations Manager, OSHA regulations, State Health Department, etc.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Support the Retreat Center with light maintenance tasks
  • Dishwashing or kitchen support during retreats, as needed


  • Housekeeping experience in establishments such as retreat centers, hotels, motels, retirement homes, colleges, or multi-family units
  • Ability to readily work as a part of a team
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to follow detailed instructions and complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Well organized and able to prioritize work
  • Ability to operate with little supervision in a quickly shifting work environment with multiple priorities and maintain a high level of performance
  • Ability to skillfully and courteously address housekeeping needs and concerns of guests
  • Ability to interact comfortably with people of various ages, economic classes, and cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some weekends
  • Physical stamina and ability to perform housekeeping tasks for up to 8 hours at a time
  • Ability to push, pull, carry, and lift up to 35 pounds, bend over, kneel, twist, reach overhead, climb stairs, and walk on varied surfaces (paved, incline, uneven, etc)
  • Ability to read, write and follow both oral and written instructions
  • Respect for spiritual traditions of all kinds
  • Basic fluency in English is preferred
  • US citizen or with a valid green card


  • Highschool diploma or higher
  • Previous housekeeping, grounds and maintenance experience. (Retreat facility a plus)

Candidates must be able to work a flexible schedule (including weekends) during scheduled retreats but will otherwise have a fixed schedule. Additional hours may be available during scheduled retreats.
