Generator Service Technician
Full-Time | Union Position (Assistance Provided for Non-Union Technicians to Join the Union)
As a Generator Service Technician, you will serve as both a technical expert and the primary customer support representative for generator maintenance and repair services. This role requires diagnosing, troubleshooting, and performing quality repairs on electrical generator systems and associated engine mechanical issues. You will be responsible for delivering an exceptional customer experience through clear communication, efficient service, and professionalism in every aspect of your work.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure all work is performed safely, meets quality standards, and is completed within estimated timeframes.
- Diagnose and repair AC electrical systems on generators, automatic transfer switches, generator controls, and engine-related mechanical failures.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance, including oil and filter changes, inspections, and system testing.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of spare parts; initiate procurement of replacement supplies and equipment as needed.
- Prepare cost and material estimates for repairs and maintenance activities.
- Collect and record data for the preventive maintenance system.
- Complete activity logs, work orders, and service reports accurately and promptly.
- Operate service vehicles and tools, including multimeters, pressure testers, feeler gauges, power drills, hammer drills, pipe benders, and welding equipment.
- Respond promptly to customer service requests, addressing questions or concerns with professionalism.
- Plan and order materials to ensure timely completion of work.
- Communicate company capabilities, products, and services effectively to clients.
- Work collaboratively with the Generator Account Manager to stay informed of project status and proactively address potential issues or opportunities.
- Document detailed and legible descriptions of all work performed, including time and materials, to ensure accurate billing.
- Travel frequently within the assigned region and work overtime, weekends, or holidays as required.
- Lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly and push/pull up to 50 lbs.
- Consistently wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, and protective footwear.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong technical knowledge of engines, generators, load transfer equipment, and electrical generator systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams, schematics, and blueprints.
- Skilled in the safe and efficient use of hand and power tools.
- Proficient in analyzing and solving complex mechanical and electrical problems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with customers and team members.
- Strong time management and organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment.
- Comfortable working in challenging environments, including inclement weather and construction sites.

Supervisory Responsibilities
- May occasionally supervise and train less experienced technicians.
Work Environment
- Indoor and outdoor settings, including businesses, factories, data centers, and active construction sites.
- Exposure to hazardous conditions, loud noise, uneven surfaces, confined spaces, and varying temperatures.
- Work environments may include dusty, damp, or unconditioned areas with limited facilities.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly use hands to handle tools, reach, and operate equipment.
- Frequently lift and carry up to 50 lbs over long distances and uneven terrain.
- Climb permanent and temporary stairs, ladders, scaffolding, and platforms up to substantial heights.
- Stand, kneel, bend, squat, crawl, and work in confined or awkward spaces.
- Vision requirements: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
Position Type and Schedule
- Non-exempt
- Full-time, with overtime and on-call hours as needed.
Travel
- Extensive travel within the assigned region.
Minimum Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience as a diesel mechanic with demonstrated expertise in generator systems.
- EGSA (Electrical Generating Systems Association) Certification.
