Job Overview
The GIS/CAD Technician is responsible for creating and maintaining geographic information systems (GIS) and computer-aided design (CAD) drawings and maps. This information is used by Metric’s scientists, engineers, and other professionals to plan, design, and implement environmental projects. The position will use their skills to develop and maintain databases of environmental data that will be used to track changes in environmental conditions over time to identify trends and help assess the impact of environmental projects. The GIS/CAD Technician will also support efforts to develop and refine corporate design and drafting standards.
The design technician will use their skills to create a variety of deliverables, including:
- Site plans that show the layout of a proposed project site, including buildings, roads, and other features.
- Topographic maps that show the elevation of a particular area.
- Watershed maps that show how water flows through a particular area.
- Groundwater maps that show the location and depth of groundwater.
- Contamination maps that show the location and extent of environmental contamination.
- Risk maps that identify areas that are at risk of environmental hazards.
- Erosion and sedimental control plans.
Duties
- Work with staff to develop exhibits for proposal sections, technical approaches, and scopes of work.
- Manage and deliver quality exhibits on time, within budget, and to the satisfaction of the client.
- Interact and communicate effectively with staff, consulting partner firms and agency contacts to achieve project objectives.
- Represent Metric with quality and timely deliverables in concert with knowledge and understanding of the project objectives
- Collect data from project managers and field staff and use the information to create construction documents, schematics, and exhibits.
- Create visually pleasing, full-color maps that efficiently communicate a variety of field conditions.
- Create GIS maps and CAD drawings to support environmental impact assessments, site investigations, and other environmental projects in an efficient manner and in accordance with complex, transitory regulations, and guidance materials.
- Use GIS to analyze environmental data and identify trends.
- Assist in maintaining electronic project files and project databases to keep internal and external stakeholders aware of project developments.
- Cross-train in other areas, as assigned, to ensure Metric’s staffing needs and your professional development goals are met.
- Maintain a billable goal of 72 hours per 80-hour pay period (90% productivity)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Highly skilled in spatial application analysis and design.
- Excellent drafting skills in AutoCAD.
- Understanding of design concepts related to geometrics, grading, drainage and utilities.
- Skill with relational databases, business intelligence and Microsoft Operating Systems and applications.
- Knowledge of, and ability to interpret and apply industry standards to data collection and management of applicable systems.
- Basic understanding of civil engineering design practices.
- Knowledge of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the Indiana Department of Transportation, West Virginia Department of Highway, Pennsylvania Department of Highway and Ohio Department of Transportation CAD and GIS standards a plus.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Communicate directly with company personnel and clients.
- Strong technical writing skills, especially the ability to explain design standards to multiple audiences.
- Ability to work both independently with limited supervision and as part of a team to solve problems of a complex nature.
- Ability to provide practical and results-oriented technical design solutions for projects.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Cartography, Geomatics, Informatics, Data Science, engineering technology, or a related field of study.
- Professional certification in GIS or CAD a plus
- In place of a degree, consideration will be given for an equivalent combination of related education and required work experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of practical experience and proficiency in GIS (ArcGIS) and CAD (AutoCAD) design preferred.
- Previous experience with ProjectWise and MicroStation a plus.
- Related experience in architectural/engineering or urban planning environment, including knowledge of automated mapping, spatial information processing methods and techniques, database design, and structure.
- Data Management experience
- Knowledge of programming languages such as SQL, Python, and Arcade is a plus.
