Position Title: HDD Project Manager

Location: Gilberts, IL (Kane County)

Department: Operations / Construction

Reports To: HDD Manager

Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt

Travel: Occasional regional travel; some overnight stays may be required based on project locations.

Company Overview

We are a growing infrastructure and underground utility contractor specializing in trenchless technologies, including Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), serving the telecommunications, electric, gas, water, and municipal sectors. Headquartered in Gilberts, IL, we deliver projects throughout the country. We pride ourselves on safety, innovation, and delivering projects on time and under budget.

Position Summary

The HDD Project Manager serves as the single point of accountability for the successful planning, execution, and closeout of Horizontal Directional Drilling projects. This role is responsible for managing all aspects of assigned projects—including scope, schedule, budget, safety, quality, and client satisfaction—while leading field crews, subcontractors, and support staff. The ideal candidate has deep technical knowledge of HDD operations (pilot boring, reaming, pullback, and pipe installation) and thrives in a fast-paced construction environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead full lifecycle management of HDD projects from pre-construction bidding and estimating through mobilization, drilling operations, restoration, and project closeout.
  • Develop and maintain detailed project schedules, budgets, forecasts, and resource plans; track progress and manage change orders to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
  • Assist on-site HDD operations, including drill rig setup, bore path planning, steering/locating, reaming, pullback, and pressure testing; coordinate with drill operators, locators, and support crews.
  • Conduct site assessments, analyze soil and geological conditions, and identify/mitigate project risks (e.g., utility conflicts, environmental concerns, or equipment issues).
  • Manage client relationships, provide regular status updates, resolve issues, and ensure high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all safety protocols, OSHA regulations, environmental requirements, permits, and company policies; champion a zero-incident safety culture through daily safety meetings and audits.
  • Prepare bids, estimates, and proposals; negotiate subcontracts and manage vendor/subcontractor performance.
  • Monitor financial performance, including cost tracking, invoicing, and profitability analysis; prepare accurate project reports for senior leadership.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (estimating, procurement, safety, and quality) to deliver projects that meet or exceed quality standards.
  • Utilize project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Procore) and HDD-specific tracking systems (e.g., DigiTrak or equivalent).

Qualifications & Requirements

Required:

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience managing Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) or trenchless utility construction projects.
  • Proven track record of successfully delivering multiple HDD projects on time, on budget, and with strong safety performance.
  • Solid understanding of HDD equipment, techniques, and best practices (experience with Vermeer, Ditch Witch, or similar rigs preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of underground utility installation (fiber optic, power, gas, water/sewer) and relevant regulations/permitting processes.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and project management software.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record; ability to pass background check and drug screening.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • PMP certification or equivalent project management credentials.
  • 7+ years of HDD-specific experience for senior-level consideration.
