This is an opportunity to join an exciting and dynamic new nonprofit organization formed to answer one of Humboldt County’s most pressing mental health needs, crisis care for young people. Sorrel Leaf Healing Center is an integrated system of care that currently operates a mobile response team, and is building out programming for a twelve bed crisis residential facility and outpatient aftercare clinic. Sorrel Leaf's comprehensive system of care will serve the needs of children and adolescents ages 7 to 18, offering transformative, compassionate, evidence-based and trauma-informed care for young people experiencing a mental health crisis.

The Head of Operations and Compliance plays a pivotal role in shaping the operational and compliance landscape of Sorrel Leaf Healing Center. They will lead the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the children's crisis residential program, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and legal requirements. The Head of Operations and Compliance strategic leadership will drive operational excellence, overseeing compliance requirements for both the mobile response team and the development of the new center.


Policy and Procedure Development:

  • Lead the creation and implementation of policies and procedures for the children's crisis residential program in cooperation with our licensing consultant, community work groups, and executive director
  • Ensure that policies align with industry best practices, legal requirements, and the organization's mission and values
  • Develop MOUs needed for service delivery in collaboration with legal council

Operational Excellence:

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the organization
  • Provide administrative oversight of programming in collaboration with the Head of Service and once the center is open the Head of House
  • Identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to enhance overall operational efficiency
  • Support budget development and management
  • Support onboarding of new staff

Team Management:

  • Build and lead a high-performing operations team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence
  • Provide guidance and support to staff to ensure the successful execution of program objectives
  • Provide oversight of contracts and completion of work for all contractors

Grant, Contract, and Data Management:

  • Create data review plan for objectives related to the Children’s Crisis Residential Program
  • Complete ongoing quarterly grant reports with support from clinical and development teams
  • Meet with state grant managers on monthly and/or as needed basis

Strategic Leadership:

  • Provide strategic direction for the organization's operations, with a focus on optimizing efficiency and effectiveness
  • Collaborate with the executive director to develop and implement long-term organizational goals
  • Develop hiring plan and timeline for staffing the Children’s Crisis Residential Program

Compliance and Risk Management:

  • Develop, implement, and manage compliance programs to ensure adherence to all relevant regulations and standards
  • Stay informed about changes in laws and regulations related to nonprofit operations and mental health services
  • Assess and mitigate risks associated with program operations, compliance, capital project, and regulatory requirements
  • Develop and implement risk management strategies to safeguard the organization
  • Support Medi-Cal Audits and Financial Audits
  • Complete compliance forms on behalf of the organization

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Collaborate with external partners including community work groups, consultants, independent contractors, county representatives, and other community organizations to ensure seamless coordination and integration of services
  • Act as key point of contact for all stakeholders
  • Provide information to Executive Director for report outs at Board meetings

Administrative Support:

  • Provide administrative support for organization, as needed, including mail management and check depositing
  • Act as signer on behalf of the organization in line with accounting procedures and expense approval protocols
  • Support gathering information around capital project,report back to Executive Director

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; Master’s degree preferred


  • Prefer atleast 5 years of experience in nonprofit operations and compliance management
  • Familiarity with Cal-AIM, Medi-Cal Billing Structures, and California mental health regulations
  • Experience working as a provider with CDSS, DHCS, preferred
  • Proven experience working with leadership teams and managing others
  • Knowledge of risk management principles
  • Knowledge of financial management principles


  • Valid California Driver’s license and a satisfactory driving clearance
  • CPR/First Aid (we will train)


  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Health Screening and Tuberculosis Test at time of hire
