Primary Purpose of Position:

To meet with families in their homes to provide impartial guidance regarding hearing loss. The applicant must be able to provide these services in both English and Spanish.

Provide information and support to parents in a home visit regarding educational rights and procedures, and to accompany families to exceptional children and regular education meetings in the school setting.

To promote early hearing detection and intervention, and to educate the general public and professionals serving families with hearing loss.

Primary Location of Position:

This position will provide services to families in the Central to Eastern region of North Carolina. This position can require daily travel 3 to 4 days a week.

Applicant should reside in the areas surrounding Guilford, Wake and Cumberland Counties and be knowledgeable of resources in those areas.

Description of Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Serve as the first contact for all families, especially those whose native language is Spanish, with children newly identified as deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Willing to learn information about all communication approaches, educational placement options, and available resources and to provide this information to families in an impartial manner.
  • Provide emotional support to families.
  • Assist families in obtaining appropriate services for their child.
  • Provide information and support to parents regarding educational rights and procedures, and to accompany families to exceptional children and regular education meetings.
  • Provide advocacy and resource services to families, schools, and other agencies where service delivery may be in dispute.
  • Support professionals serving families by providing resources and support.

Work Schedule:

Forty (40) hours per week, with varying hours covering the five (5) days of the workweek. Position will include benefits.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong written and oral skills are required.
  • Hispanic Outreach/Parent Educator must be a Native Spanish speaker. Strong written and oral bilingual skills are required as translation of documents will be a responsibility of this position.
  • KNowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) or Cued Language is helpful, but not required.
  • Position requires an adequate knowledge of computer usage, including case management software and online meeting platforms.
  • There needs to be a high degree of attention to detail and accuracy, and proven ability to work in a team environment. Employee needs to possess ability to work with a minimum of supervision, and must have effective interaction skills.
  • BEGINNINGS Parent Educators travel on the average of 600-1000 miles per month. This travel is necessary in order to visit parents at their homes, attend school meetings, staff development activities and meet with other professionals serving families of children with hearing loss. Monthly mileage compensation is provided. Parent Educators must hold a valid driver’s license and have current automobile insurance coverage.

Required Minimum Training:

  • Minimum of 4-year college degree required, preferably in Education of the Deaf, Early Childhood Development, Public Health, or Social Work, and a minimum of 5 years work experience in one of these areas
  • BEGINNINGS is an independent, nonprofit agency in North Carolina. The expected salary range for this 40-hour per week, 12-month position is $55,000 to $60,000 depending on training and experience.
