Objective of Role
Provide exceptional customer service to walk-in and call-in customers, explain products and their use, identify customer needs and suggest products that would satisfy those needs, conduct routine counters sales, schedule deliveries, and maintain the showroom in a neat and orderly fashion.

Essential Functions
Note: “Yard” includes Inventory Area, Block Yard, Brick Yard, Warehouse, and Misc.

  • Assisting walk-in customers by listening to their needs and suggesting products that would fulfill their needs.
  • Learning products available for purchase and explaining how they may be used to meet a customer’s needs.
  • Performing routine office administrative functions like data entry, inventory control, filing, answering the phone, and handling cash / credit sales.
  • Using the computer system to generate invoices, order inventoried product, and enter sales data.
  • Calculating volume of product required to fulfill a customer’s order, computing change due from cash transactions, and managing inventory in the showroom.
  • Scheduling trucks to transport material and products.
  • Maintaining a clean and organized showroom and office space.
  • Helping co-workers with outside sales as needed and directed
  • Adheres to all company safety policies and procedures
  • Performing ALL tasks in a safe and professional manner by watching out for foot traffic, following standards and procedures; and complying with legal regulations.

Required Skills

  • Reading comprehension – ability to read documents to learn about products and services offered, file company documents and invoices, and understand and adhere to company policies and procedures
  • Math skills -- ability to calculate volume of product needed, make change following cash transactions, manage inventory in the showroom, and process invoices and bills of lading
  • Inventory Control – basic understanding of inventory control principles
  • Documentation Skills – ability to clearly and concisely document inventory management data in a timely manner according to approved processes
  • Computer skills –basic computer skills to use inventory and warehousing software systems
  • Physical fitness – counter sales staff should be physically fit to lift, stand, bend, and carry moderately heavy objects on a daily basis. See physical requirements.
  • Initiative – ability maintain daily tasks and responsibilities with limited supervision
  • Safety Management – the ability to use the tools and resources around you to maintain a safe working environment for yourself and others

Work Environment Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds
  • Ability to sit, stand, squat, and stretch repeatedly throughout the work shift
  • Ability to use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, operate basic office equipment, type, and routine data entry
  • Ability to stand and sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to see details of objects that are more than a few feet away, with or without corrective lenses
  • Ability to see objects that are off to one side while looking forward (peripheral vision)
  • Ability to determine the distance between objects
  • Ability to hear sounds and respond (such as warning alarms)

Work hours and Schedule:

  • Full time or part time – Full Time
  • Typical work hours and shifts: 7:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m.
  • Days of week – Monday - Friday
  • Overtime may be scheduled and required.
  • No travel required

Work Environment:

  • Indoors, but may be required to walk outdoors to Yard during all seasons
  • Temperature-controlled office environment, but may be required to assist customers outside during all seasons
  • Exposure to moving equipment, trucks, and heavy products

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, some college preferred
  • Excellent communications skills
  • 1-2 years’ retail and / or counter sales desired, but not required
  • Good language, communication, and reading skills
  • Basic computer and telephone skills
  • Knowledge of routine office equipment such as faxes, copiers, and scanners
  • Reliable transportation required
