Description of Role:

Each instructional coach at Once will be responsible for remotely coaching school-based instructors. These instructors tutor early-elementary students in foundational reading skills each day using a scripted curriculum we provide. Tutoring sessions are recorded, allowing coaches to view them remotely. Based on these virtual observations, coaches will lead weekly live virtual coaching sessions with each instructor. Through the process of coaching instructors, coaches take responsibility for the reading progress of hundreds of students from across the country, ensuring that they master reading skills by the end of our one-year program.

Responsibilities:

  • Build instructors’ skill, ability and confidence to teach Once reading curriculum.
  • Aid in onboarding and training of instructors prior to the launch of tutoring in schools.
  • Work with and develop a diverse population of instructors, using creativity and resilience to invest them in teaching the program and engage them in coaching meetings.
  • Conduct consistent observations of instruction by studying recordings of instructors’ sessions and plan and prepare targeted feedback.
  • Provide continual guidance and development via ongoing weekly individual coaching sessions with instructors.
  • Study and practice Once curriculum instruction to model at a high level and ensure that instructors are teaching effectively.
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy while encouraging instructor improvement by correcting errors directly, consistently, and with care.
  • Facilitate live practice with instructors of specific aspects of instruction regularly to ensure that all of your feedback gets implemented precisely.
  • Study instructors’ performance data (duration of sessions, pacing in the curriculum, student mastery, student growth) in order to inform your coaching decisions.
  • Participate in internal training, ongoing professional development sessions, and feedback meetings about the quality of your instructional coaching.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with dozens of diverse instructors.
  • Continually engage in professional learning about the science of reading and the art of instructional leadership.

Qualifications:

  • You have a firm belief in and commitment to Once’s mission.
  • You are willing to go above and beyond for the sake of your instructors and the students.
  • You maintain high expectations for every instructor. Each instructor will be different, so you will differentiate your approaches accordingly, but you will maintain ambitious goals for them all.
  • You pay meticulous attention to detail when preparing for coaching sessions, attending to the instructors, their students, data, and feedback from other leaders.
  • You have creative problem solving skills and a passion for relentlessly iterating in the pursuit of excellence.
  • You are willing to take personal responsibility for your instructors’ success and for your own.
  • You have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Clarity is key!
  • You are eager for feedback and committed to your own continual improvement as a coach.
  • You speak and act lovingly to every instructor regardless of how any instructor may speak and act toward you.
