Lead Mechanical Designer

The Lead Mechanical Designer is responsible for the conceptualization and creation of mechanical designs for custom automation systems used in various industries. This role focuses on generating detailed mechanical designs, including 3D models and drawings, for automation equipment, ensuring compliance with client specifications and industry standards. As a key member of the engineering team, the Lead Mechanical Designer collaborates closely with mechanical engineers, project managers, and manufacturing teams to deliver high-quality, efficient, and innovative solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Protect and cultivate our collaborative work culture, promoting teamwork, trust, and open communication among all team members.
  • Develop detailed 3D CAD models and 2D drawings for custom automation systems and mechanical components.
  • Lead the design of mechanical subsystems, ensuring compatibility with project requirements, manufacturability, and ease of assembly.
  • Collaborate with engineers and project managers to ensure designs meet specifications, budgets, and timelines.
  • Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) and detailed parts lists for projects.
  • Perform design reviews and integrate feedback from cross-functional teams, including electrical engineers and assembly technicians.
  • Select materials and components to optimize design performance, cost, and durability.
  • Work closely with manufacturing and fabrication teams to ensure designs are feasible and align with production capabilities.
  • Perform GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) to ensure precision in designs and compatibility with manufacturing processes.
  • Participate in client meetings to discuss design specifications, updates, and ensure alignment with client goals.
  • Mentor other designers and contribute to continuous improvement within the design team.
  • Ensure project budgets, schedules, and quality goals are met, communicating with both internal stakeholders and clients.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical design, industrial design, or a related field (associate's degree with extensive experience may be considered).
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical design, with a strong focus on automation systems and tooling design.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks and AutoCAD for creating 3D models and 2D drawings.
  • Strong knowledge of GD&T, mechanical drafting standards, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience creating and managing Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail in mechanical design.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a cross-functional team environment, ensuring alignment with engineering, project management, and manufacturing teams.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in industrial automation, robotics, or automated equipment design.
  • Familiarity with pneumatics, hydraulics, and motion control systems.
  • Knowledge of ISO and OSHA standards related to mechanical design and industrial safety.
  • Previous experience in mentoring other designers or leading small teams.
  • Certification in DFMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) or similar methodologies.
