Full job description
Job Function: Under the supervision of the Director of Operations, the Library Assistant helps create a welcoming atmosphere for customers of all ages and assists them at our public service desks with information and reference questions, assists and instructs customers with their use of library computers, personal electronic devices, and other technologies, check out materials to customers, register customers for library cards, and interpret Library policy in a friendly and efficient way. This position will also help plan, prepare, and execute programming.
Schedule will primarily be evenings and Weekends!
Functions (including but not limited to):
This position will staff a Public Service Desk at least 90% of the time. This position will primarily be covering the main desks located on each floor of the building. However, this position may be called to cover any other Public Service desk in the building.
Your role at a Public Service desk may include in the following functions:
- Acknowledging every patron as they enter and leave your assigned area
- Charges and discharges materials on Polaris system
- Issues library cards
- Answers telephone
- Solve customer concerns
- Assists adults in the use of public computers and other electronic devices
- Provides assistance in the use of the Internet, the online catalog, and databases to which the library subscribes.
- Troubleshoots problems with software and educational games on the public computers.
- Assist and advise customers with their use of library materials, including books, movies, music, media, and electronic resources
- Monitor and address customer behavior to ensure a safe and welcoming environment
Provide support in the planning, preparation, and execution of relevant and engaging programs for all ages in
Performs other related duties as assigned in support of the Mission and Vision of the Library
Requirements
- Exceptional customer service skills and commitment to public service
- Ability to work with library customers and staff in a consistently friendly and efficient manner
- Physical ability to lift library materials weighing up to 25 pounds and to push fully loaded carts of library materials
- Ability to learn and perform routine library functions and procedures
- Ability to learn and use the computerized circulation system
- Ability to learn and apply phone system and money collecting procedures
- Excellent computer and technology skills, including use of the Internet, computers, mobile devices, and social media
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Good interpersonal and communications skills for working within a team environment
- Ability to communicate policy to library customers
- Flexibility to adapt to changing situations and to vary work schedule
- Knowledge of and interest in books (print and electronic), music, and movies
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, OneDrive, Teams, and Excel)
- Ability to perform routine clerical and record-keeping tasks
- Ability to maintain reliable attendance and regular schedule
- Satisfactory criminal background check
- Weekend and evening shifts required
Acceptable Experience and Training:
- Associates degree or any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
- Previous customer service experience will be preferred
Compensation: Hourly support staff position; starts at $17.00 an hour, depends on work experience and education level; Up to 25 hours a week
