The Linn County Library District #5 (HIVE Library) is accepting applications for a full-time Library Director. This individual must be comfortable using library and office technology, be forward thinking with a positive attitude, and have a passion for exceptional library service and the ability to lead a multifunctional team.

The ability to exercise good judgment, communicate effectively and positively with various government and community groups, and to lead and inspire staff with creative new ideas for increasing visibility of library services to the community is critical. We believe that the library is a critical centerpiece for the community and thus the person filling this position must be capable of working closely with staff, community officials, the library board, and strategic partners to provide critical educational and professional development services to the community of Pleasanton, KS and the surrounding area.

Qualifications, Education, and Requisite Skills:

High School Graduate (minimum requirement); Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (preferred requirement)

2 years’ experience in Library Operations: working knowledge of the basics of operating a circulation desk using a computerized system is a must.

Experience directing library operations is preferred.

Experience managing one or more persons preferred.

Ability to use basic computer programs (Microsoft Suite, Quicken/QuickBooks, Library databases, on-line bill pay, etc.)

Ability to lift 10-15 pounds.

General Statement of Responsibilities:

The Library Director carries out the mission of the library under the general direction of the Board of Trustees of the Linn County Library District #5 and manages all aspects of library services with vision, responsibility, and authority. The Director will work with the board and staff to implement the 2024-2028 Strategic Action Plan as adopted June 21, 2023. The Director plans, organizes, directs, and manages library operations, provides popular high interest resources to meet the education, recreational, and informational needs of community residents, and coordinates the program of services subject to the policies established by the Board of Trustees.

Primary Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning: Support planning and implementation of the 2024 - 2028 Strategic Action Plan.

General Oversight: Oversee library-wide services, administering library business in compliance with the library policies.

Financial Management: manage the budget, payroll, annual financial reports, and cash flow including comprehensive tracking of expenses.

o Prepare and recommend budgets, oversee library payroll and bills, and generate reports and statistics as required by the Board.

o Assess and determine budgetary operating and capital needs.

Collection Management: Design and develop plans to ensure effective use of present and future materials, collections, and technology applications. Oversee print, non-print, and electronic collection development, organization, maintenance, and withdrawal and disposal.

Facilities Management: oversee building, grounds, equipment, furnishings.

Outreach and Community Engagement: Create and cultivate a culture of communication, respect, and teamwork among staff volunteers, and the community.

Staff Management: Select, direct, evaluate, and train new and existing employees. Effectively schedule staff to meet the library needs.

Marketing: Promote library services to enhance visibility to the community and surrounding areas in multiple forums (printed news, posters, online, social media, etc.)

Programming: Oversee and direct year-round programming for children, young adults, and adults

Attend monthly library board meetings. A few days prior to the meeting, provide monthly library board packet via email to include meeting agenda created in collaboration with the board chairperson, director’s report, important correspondence, secretary’s minutes from previous meeting, monthly circulation statistics, programming statistics, financial report, and any supporting documentation that concerns unfinished/new business prior to the meeting.

Policy Creation and Implementation: This is done in conjunction with the Board and the Board approves policy. The Library Director along with the staff input develops procedures to implement policy.
