BUILDING INSPECTOR
We are looking for a full time Local Buidling Inspector for the Towns of Great Barrington, Lenox, Lee and Stockbridge in accordance with our Inter-Municipal Agreement.
Summary
The Building Inspector performs technical and inspection work related to the enforcement and interpretation of the Massachusetts Building Code, the zoning bylaw and other applicable codes relating to building construction and design; all other related work, as required. Compensation range is based on licenses. Schedule is flexible but starts with Monday through Friday 8:30-4:30pm.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed, the omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.
- Enforces the Massachusetts Building Code and the town zoning bylaw; inspects buildings, alterations to buildings under construction and upon completion;
- Monitors compliance with zoning and other pertinent state and local regulations;
- Investigates zoning bylaw complaints and takes appropriate action.
- Reviews plans for building construction or alteration for compliance with the Building Code; reviews site plans to ensure compliance with zoning regulations;
- Reviews special permit applications.
- Conducts periodic inspections relating to safety conditions of existing multiple-unit dwellings and places of assembly; confers with developers, builders, engineers, property owners, and the general public regarding construction matters.
- Periodically conducts joint inspections with the Fire Department or the Board of Health for code enforcement purposes; may work on grants relating to demolition and inspect buildings for the rehabilitation program.
- Performs administrative functions; issues building permits and sign permits, and writes inspection reports; responds to requests for information.
- Performs other similar or related duties, as required or as situation dictates.
Supervision
Works under the supervision of the Building Commissioner for the Town of Great Barrington; performs responsible functions of a complex and technical nature involving the exercise of judgment in the application and interpretation of building codes and the town zoning bylaw.
Work Environment
- Some work is performed under typical office conditions; frequent inspection and site investigation work is performed in the field, with exposure to variable weather conditions, loud noise and the hazards associated with construction sites, including exposure to potentially dangerous materials.
- The employee operates an automobile and standard office equipment.
- The employee has extensive contact with the general public, homeowners, builders, and other town officials and departments, such as the Fire Department and Board of Health; contact is generally by telephone and in person.
- Errors could result in damage to property, delay or loss of service, monetary loss or legal repercussions.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications/Education and Experience
- High school diploma and advanced technical training; five years of experience in the supervision of building construction or design; or a Bachelor's Degree in a related field desired; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- MA State certification as a Building Inspector or the ability to obtain certification within 18 months of employment, refer to MGLc 143 and 780 CMR, based on 110.R7.2.3.1.
- Valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license
Knowledge, Ability, and Skill
- Thorough knowledge of the materials, methods and equipment used in building construction and the Massachusetts Building Code, local zoning and other applicable state statutes, rules and regulations; general knowledge of the accepted requirements for building construction.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and plans, Massachusetts General Laws and regulations, engineering criteria and design information and communicate information to the general public; ability to enforce regulations firmly, tactfully and impartially; ability to interact appropriately with the general public and members of the building community; ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form.
- Good communication and public relations skills.
Physical Requirements
Minimal physical effort is required to perform administrative duties; moderate physical effort is required to perform field work. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak and hear, reach with hands and arms, use hands to operate equipment, stoop and bend; must be able to access all areas of a construction site. Vision requirements include the ability to read and analyze documents and operate a motor vehicle.
