TLM is backed by leading investors including Cantos, Slow Ventures, Susa Ventures, Banter, and Ravelin Capital.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lumber Grading Lead to oversee the grading process at our New Albany facility. This role will lead a team of graders, ensuring that products meet the highest standards for quality and consistency while supporting the company’s mission of low-cost, high-efficiency operations. This full-time, salaried position reports to the Mill Manager and plays an integral role in TLM’s overall success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise daily lumber grading activities to ensure products meet company, customer, and industry standards.
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate grading personnel to ensure consistent application of grading rules and implement best practices.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with safety protocols and company policies.
  • Conduct quality control checks, identifying and addressing discrepancies or inaccuracies in grading.
  • Maintain accurate records of graded lumber, production metrics, and inventory levels.
  • Coordinate with other departments to ensure seamless workflow and timely delivery of graded lumber.
  • Remain current on industry grading standards and lead the incorporation of changes into operational processes.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues and collaborate with maintenance teams to minimize downtime.
  • Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance grading efficiency and reduce waste.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in forestry, wood science, or a related field is preferred.
  • Holds lumber grading certification. Certification in softwood preferred.
  • Proven experience in lumber grading and/or supervisory roles within the wood products industry.
  • Strong knowledge of lumber grading standards (e.g. ALS, or other regional standards).
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to train and motivate teams effectively.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong focus on quality assurance.
  • Proficiency with grading equipment, systems, and relevant computer software.
  • Physical ability to work in an industrial environment, including standing for extended periods and handling lumber.

Work Environment:

The position involves working in a fast-paced, industrial setting with exposure to noise, dust, and heavy machinery. The Lumber Grading Supervisor must be comfortable leading a team in dynamic conditions and ensuring safe work practices.
