Full job description

Michigan City Public Library seeks a full-time maintenance employee. Assist in the maintenance of the physical plant, grounds, furnishings and utility systems. Maintain records of monthly purchases and all pertinent receipts, instruction booklets and warranty information regarding maintenance equipment and services. 40 hours a week with excellent benefits.

Position Description

Title: Maintenance II

Non-Exempt Employee

Salary Range : $16.00 to $24.00

General Statement of Responsibility:

Assist in the maintenance of the physical plant, grounds, furnishings and utility systems. Maintain records of monthly purchases and all pertinent receipts, instruction booklets and warranty information regarding maintenance equipment and services.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

Maintenance II requires solid judgment, maturity, strong organizational, leadership and communication skills. Attention to detail is critical and the work is repetitive in nature. Once learned, the duties and routines are independently performed. Maintenance II reports to the Maintenance Supervisor I, then the Director then Assistant Director.

Required Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Library policies and procedures
  • Purchasing policy and procedures
  • Material Safety Data Sheets
  • Windows-based computer system, word-processing
  • Internet skills
  • Preventive maintenance of equipment
  • Roofing systems
  • Snow removal
  • Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning units
  • Gardening techniques, including pruning, mowing, planting
  • Electrical and mechanical trouble shooting techniques
  • Minor electrical and mechanical repairs
  • Cleaning of building interior and furnishings
  • Lawn mowers, personnel lift, and tools
  • Proper safety techniques

Ability to:

  • Read, write, and speak English clearly
  • Negotiate with vendors
  • Exercise logical judgment
  • Work independently
  • Follow and enforce directions and policies
  • Prioritize work assignments
  • Work with contractors
  • Bend and kneel repeatedly, reach overhead, climb ladders, and work in high and enclosed spaces, especially the roof
  • Lift 50 lbs.
  • Work all hours the library is open to cover Maintenance chores and clear snow and work extra hours in times of weather-related emergencies
  • Hold CPR/AED certification
  • Work as a member of a team to accomplish the department’s and library’s goals and objectives

Examples of Work (Illustrative Only):

1. Daily cleaning of all bathrooms

2. Assist with preventive maintenance on heating and air conditioning units

3. Maintain irrigation system

4. Maintain lawn mowers and other equipment and tools

5. Troubleshoot electrical and mechanical problems

6. Make electrical and mechanical repairs, when possible

7. Seek professional help, when necessary, to make emergency repairs or perform work beyond expertise

8. Make recommendations to the Superiors for long term projects

9. Maintain the lawn and all library plants, including mowing, pruning, and weed control

10. Deliver outgoing mail weekdays to the Post Office and retrieve incoming mail

11. Order supplies

12. Replenish supplies

13. Daily cleaning of the library interior

14. Lift and move books, furniture and other materials when needed

15. Assemble shelving, tables, furniture, and other items as needed

16. Sweep and mop floors

17. Vacuum carpeting and general cleaning of carpet stains

18. Dust and clean all shelving on a regular schedule

19. Attend library meetings and in-service training sessions

20. Other duties as required

Qualifications: On-the-job general maintenance and janitorial experience

Preferred Knowledge of:

  • Heating and air conditioning technology
  • Electrical and mechanical systems
  • Building and grounds maintenance
  • Use of power and hand tools
  • Roofing systems

Preferred Experience with:

  • Building maintenance
  • Janitorial maintenance
  • Grounds keeping
  • Electrical and mechanical repair
  • HVAC preventative maintenance, repair, and thermostat control
