About QPD

QPD provides custom contract machining and manufacturing services serving the semi-conductor, life sciences, and other industries. At this time, we have two facility locations in Oregon. The Hillsboro location provides contract manufacturing services for prototyping, machining, and assembly with cleanroom capabilities. Our Cornelius facility provides precision sheet metal manufacturing, rounding out our ability to provide best in class full integration services to our customer base.

Position Snapshot

Our team is growing, and we are seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer III. Reporting to the General Manager, this role will focus on developing and improving manufacturing processes and implementing automation solutions to improve operational efficiency and profitability. You will define critical process parameters to successfully prototype and mass produce customer parts and electromechanical assemblies, while managing new equipment and fixture designs to validate product design and manufacturing processes.

A key aspect of this role involves creating detailed work instructions to document new processes, training operators and technicians on new equipment and processes, and establishing manufacturing recipes during product prototyping phase to ensure proper transfer to full production. You will maintain highly interactive relationships with internal teams and external partners to help realize our customers' designs in production. This is a key role in customer interface.

Key Responsibilities

Process Development & Automation

  • Develop and implement automation solutions to optimize manufacturing processes and increase operational efficiency
  • Translate customer requirements into factory activities; create and document associated factory support activities needed for product manufacturing and testing
  • Develop, implement, and maintain methods, operation sequences, and processes in the manufacturing of sub-assemblies and final assemblies
  • Systematically evaluate assembly processes; then develop and apply improvements
  • Lead the development of assembly processes for new products via systematic and thorough methodology

Profitability & Efficiency

  • Work closely with Customer Relations/Business Development and Estimating to ensure customer specified quotation requirements are reviewed and quotations include risks and opportunities for greater Gross Margin realization
  • Analyze and plan workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout to maximize efficiency
  • Drive continuous improvement activities for existing manufacturing lines
  • Anticipate capacity needs and develop plans to meet growth projections
  • Technical Expertise
  • Gather, understand, and convert customer data into usable manufacturing information
  • Create product assembly work instructions and checklists
  • Create and maintain process drawings (Solidworks, Model Based Development- MBD, Predator, etc.)
  • Perform Virtual Builds using 3D CAD models to determine product manufacturability including BOM validation, build sequence determination, labor hour estimation, DMFA, tooling, and fixtures assessment
  • Build prototypes including machining parts; provide redesign improvements and value engineering

Customer & Quality Focus

  • Work with customers to provide design and manufacturability suggestions
  • Review new designs for manufacturability and make recommendations on improvements
  • Participate in design reviews and prototype builds for manufacturing process development
  • Assure product and process quality by determining product and process capabilities
  • Implement Quality protocols through development of tools, layout, work instructions, and training of assembly personnel

Additional Duties

  • Work with outside suppliers on outsourcing activities
  • Design and procure manufacturing fixtures
  • ISO and OSHA compliance within your scope of work
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related activities as needed
  • Follow all safety and quality requirements
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • BS in Manufacturing, Mechanical, Industrial or Electrical Engineering required
  • 10+ years experience in manufacturing engineering for a contract manufacturer
  • Mathematical skills equivalent to those required under degree requirement
  • Experience in DFM with customer interface
  • Experience with project planning and budget management
  • Strong proven experience working in cross-functional teams such as quality, manufacturing and engineering
  • Experience implementing automation solutions in manufacturing settings
  • Strong familiarity with the ISO9001 Quality Management Standard
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment that may include shifting priorities, demands and resources
  • Strong interpersonal skills and extremely resourceful
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • Adept at conducting research into project-related issues and products
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work overtime as needed
  • Eligible to work in the U.S.

Working Environment

Combination of office environment and a temperature-controlled production shop floor environment requiring sitting/standing for extended periods of time; ability to utilize office equipment such as computers and printers, occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs with assistance; occasionally crouching or bending at the knees. Personal protective equipment (safety glasses, ear protection, safety shoes, shields etc.) may be required. Exposure to moderate levels of noise on the shop floor in a well-lit, well-ventilated, and fast-paced setting.

Workload may be unpredictable, and pressure increased during peak times. Critical deadlines require considerable flexibility and adaptability. Disturbances of workflow and/or irregularities in work schedule may occur on an intermittent basis. Extra hours may be required, sometimes on weekends, weekdays, or holidays.
