Engineering Internship

  • Application Deadline:Applications accepted on a rolling basis.
  • Position: Engineering Internship, Glass Factory
  • Location: In person on site (45 min from Milwaukee) and remote
  • Work authorization requirements: Legally able to work in the United States as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act (ICRA)
  • Contract Details: 20-30 hours per week is preferred but flexible.
  • Start date: As soon as possible, Fall 2023.

About Left Hand Engineering

Left Hand Engineering is a consulting and contracting firm in Milwaukee, Wisconsin that approaches problems with a creative and divergent thinking. We help manufacturers in the southeast Wisconsin with product development, process improvement, and overall strategic alignment of their business. Our work spans many industries and can range from in the weeds such as design and development (think Solidworks), to high level coaching and best practices. Left Hand Engineering launched Glass Factory in 2023 to help our customers improve throughput.

About this Position

Left Hand Engineering seeks a talented and entrepreneurial engineering intern to join our team. At Left Hand Engineering we think outside the box to develop solutions to the problems Wisconsin manufacturing facilities face. As an Engineering Intern, you will receive hands-on experience and training in multiple aspects of manufacturing. Our goal is to gear you up to start your career! This role is a combination of engineering and entrepreneurship. A typical day might include sketching concepts in the morning, drawing them in Solidworks during lunch, passing it on to the fabrication team in the afternoon, and helping install in the field in the evening.

This is not your run-of-the-mill office internship. It is a chance for you learn as you go and gain valuable experience in Wisconsin manufacturing industry. If that excites you like it does us, then you might be just the person we are looking for.

Job Responsibilities

  • New Product Development - Following new product development project plans and stage gates.
  • Strategic Sourcing- developing reliable key supplier relations.
  • Design for manufacturability - work closely with manufacturing floor to ensure concepts mesh into current capabilities.
  • Entrepreneurship – learn about running a small business, help in the day-to-day of client acquisition, strategic planning, and many other aspects of entrepreneurship.

  • Project management: You will be able to show us through your past work, or academic success, that you are able to make a plan and deliver a project on time, within budget.
  • Growth mentality: You will be excited to grow the portfolio of businesses we serve, set goals to improve their throughput, and help them execute.
  • Strong communication skills: Step 3 of Glass Factory involves educating the team at the manufacturing company. We have excellent resources at Left Hand Engineering to support this, but you will be expected to help prepare for these presentations.
  • Engineering skills: Mechanical/Industrial Engineer (in training) is preferred. This job will require you to define process capabilities, establish quality metrics, cycle times, and process improvement.
  • Data competency: We would prefer if you are confident working with data.
  • Flexible workstyle: Left Hand engineering prides itself on using creative and divergent thinking to solve technical problems. You should be excellent at thinking outside of the box to solve problems and will be ready to back this up with some examples from your prior work experience.
  • 3D Modeling – SolidWorks: Preferred, not required.
  • Knowledge of welding, machining, fabrication, and assembly is preferred.

Job Type: Contract

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
