Job Title: Mechanical Engineer – Maintenance and Reliability Engineering
Overview:
DECK Four Innovation, Inc. is a sub-contractor supporting overall management and implementation of ground systems capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. These tasks will support the International Space Station, Exploration Ground Systems, Space Launch System, Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services programs.

Job Duties:
The primary role of the Mechanical Engineer is to help drive the proliferation of asset management best practices and methodologies that will allow the most efficient and best value decisions for the use and care of assets to maximize the return on investment of all assets entrusted to the Test and Operations Support Contract (TOSC). Engineer will assist the TOSC in developing a more proactive maintenance culture within the organization through the expansion of condition-based monitoring technologies and the implementation of reliability centered maintenance (RCM) efforts in support of NASA supported programs at Kennedy Space Center. Engineer will be responsible for optimizing work processes and administrative controls while utilizing Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and RCM principles in support of existing and future maintenance practices.
Specific areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:
- Establish and drive reliability engineering principles and best practices in accordance with the NASA RCM Guide, Society of Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP) body of knowledge, and other industry best practices
- Implements measures to baseline current maintenance performance and identify improvement targets as they relate to costs, quality, downtime, etc.
- Work with asset owners to document and optimize their preventive maintenance approach
- Define, develop, and implement processes for establishing and maintaining an effective RCM program for applicable equipment and systems
- Guides and coordinates RCM efforts to increase reliability and maintainability of equipment and refine maintenance practices
- Facilitate RCM efforts that include: developing asset hierarchies, asset criticality analysis, asset selection for RCM, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), maintenance strategies, etc.
- Review data and information using basic statistical tools to transition time based maintenance into condition based maintenance
- Assists in the design, development, administration, and refinement of maintenance strategies for applicable assets
- Responsible for assisting system owners with improving/automating operations and maintenance tasks to provide maximum preservation of asset function
- Responsible for the facilitation of continuous improvement processes centered around asset availability and reliability
- Provides day to day engineering support for operations and maintenance issues
- Assists in streamlining the data capture, calculations, analysis, and reporting of key performance metrics
- Review and recommend maintenance best practices for new designs and installations
- Perform condition based monitoring, troubleshooting and testing including oil analysis, infrared thermography, vibration analysis, ultrasound analysis, motor circuit analysis, and laser shaft alignment
- Analyzes preliminary engineering design concepts of assets or systems to recommend design or test methods for attaining customer-specified operational reliability, using knowledge of reliability engineering and other technologies
- Interface with customers and manage completion of tasks on schedule and within budget to the customer’s satisfaction
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science degree in an appropriate engineering field from an accredited engineering school plus ten (10) years of progressive and relevant experience. Additional relevant education may be substituted for a portion of the experience.
- Current certification as a Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional, or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months, required
- Must be able to obtain industry standard certifications for applicable technologies such as FAA Part 107, CMRT, Vibration Analysis, Ultrasonic Analysis, and Infrared Thermography.
- Experience with condition monitoring technologies such as oil analysis, infrared thermography, vibration analysis, ultrasound analysis, motor circuit analysis, and laser shaft alignment
- Current industry certifications in the above condition monitoring technologies, or ability to obtain, required
- Possess a clear understanding of RCM principles and other maintenance improvement tools such as, but not limited to, FEMAs and asset criticality rankings
- Ability to facilitate and implement RCM efforts
- Experience with working in a Computerized Maintenance Management System (MAXIMO is a strong plus)
- Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team environment
- Must be able to coordinate work between multiple project disciplines
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects without missing deadlines or sacrificing accuracy
- Must be self-motivated, demonstrate initiative, and be able to work in fast-paced environments
- Ability to mentor less experienced engineers and technicians
- Must be able to work independently or with minimal supervision
- Demonstrated written and verbal presentation skills for interfacing with management and customers (internal and external)
- Excellent technical writing, communication, presentation, and customer interface skills
- Ability to build positive/effective relationships with clients and co-workers and demonstrates focus on satisfying both internal and external customers
- Expert computer skills using Microsoft Office products
- Ability to analyze data: graphing, spreadsheets, and macros and/or pivot tables
- Accepts responsibility for safety of yourself and others
Essential Functions:
Physical Requirements
- Will be required to climb stairs in order to access assets for troubleshooting
- Must be comfortable working at heights
- Position may involve extended periods of sitting or standing
- Will be required to wear hearing protection, eye protection, and other associated personal protective equipment
- Physical requirements are: sitting, walking, standing, extensive use of stairs, and access to remote structures
- Position will occasionally be located in a hazardous testing facility; must be able to quickly evacuate buildings in the event of an emergency
Work Environment
- Will be required to work inside and outside operational and testing facilities
- Position may require daily individual travel to different areas on KSC property
- Walking on uneven terrain including paved areas, gravel/rocks, and dirt/sand is required to access various locations on KSC property
- Climbing ladders and platforms will be necessary
- All work must be completed in a safe manner in accordance with NASA and company safety standards
Equipment and Machines
- Computers and printers used for producing analyses, reports, and schedules
- Variety of equipment used in performing testing
Attendance
- Full-time regular work hours between Monday-Friday
- Position will require occasional overtime including weekend work depending on task
- Must be dependable and punctual
- Shift work may be required
Other Essential Functions
- Must be able to accurately communicate ideas in writing and verbal communication
- Must be able to travel to support position requirements; this may include travel to and from customer location, which may involve airline travel. In some cases, accommodations can be made for POV, if necessary
- Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others
- Must comply with all “drug free workplace” requirements as mandated by directives issued by the appropriate federal contracting officer and the company, which requires drug testing for use of illegal drugs by employees in sensitive positions
- Government security clearance may be required in the future
- Must maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relations with customers, clients, co-workers, and management
