JOB SUMMARY:

The successful intern will support the Media and Marketing Manager (MMM) with creating, coordinating and implementing a broad range of media communications to strengthen and advance the objectives and strategies of the Publications section. Works to effectively communicate the mission of The Salvation Army as expressed through the Publication department’s objectives, so relationships with existing audiences are strengthened and new audiences are reached.

  • Assists MMM in formulating and coordinating media communications, including initiatives for The War Cry and Peer. Such communications involve handling with discretion and sensitivity.
  • Works with MMM by meeting at least weekly to plan, review, obtain and prepare content for publishing through social media channels, newsletters and website publishing platforms.
  • Assists with generating social media content in various formats including written, graphics and short-form video. Ensures the uniformity in messaging and an intentional application of strategies to achieve objectives.
  • Assists MMM in creating and maintaining schedules for all electronic communications. Monitors same to see that all are deadlines met.
  • Reports on metrics/analytics for social media, websites, subscriptions and podcast. Leads monthly media meeting reviewing analytics.
  • Assists MMM in developing and implementing strategies for marketing of national publications within The Salvation Army structure.
  • Assists MMM in developing and implementing strategies for marketing of national publications to outside markets. This includes identifying colleges, private schools and existing youth groups, outside of The Salvation Army, to partner with Peer. With MMM, strategizes new ways to increase circulation, including plans for implementation.
  • Creates newsletters to be sent at least monthly.
  • Recommends strategies for improving quality and reach of national publications content as tailored for both electronic and print media.
  • Maintains a cooperative work environment with team, so all parties achieve objectives.
  • Uploads website content on thewarcry.org and peermag.org as needed.
  • Assists MMM with coordination and execution of long-form video projects and podcasts as needed.
  • Researches industry standards for web based communications, social media, graphic design and video production as needed.
  • Analyzes research findings and creates report briefs for section leadership as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Preferred applicants should be enrolled in a Communications, Marketing, English, Creative Writing, Public Relations Bachelor’s program, or similar program. Recent graduates are also eligible.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok, Twitter (X) and YouTube.

Ability to learn specific software to include, but not limited to, Sprout Social, Constant Contact, Canva, WordPress, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere and Adobe Audition.

Ability to analyze established strategies and improve quality and outreach of national publications.

Ability to gather, compile and assemble information for use in reports, letters, official records, etc.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed in a normal office environment where there is little or no physical discomforts associated with changes in weather or discomforts associated with noise, dust, dirt and the like.

This is an on-site position with free underground parking and lunches offered. The internship will be three days per week and 21 hours per week. It will start on May 12 and end on July 25.
