Position Purpose. To serve as the staff medical assistant, responsible for training clinical volunteers to support medical providers in providing patient care. Additionally, to assist healthcare providers directly when volunteers are not available.
Position Summary. The LVIM Medical Assistant (MA) offers consistent support services to healthcare professionals. This involves training and supervising clinical volunteers in performing both medical assistant and clinical assistant duties. In the absence of an MA/CA volunteer, the Medical Assistant continues to carry out these duties to facilitate patient care and ensure the smooth operation of the clinic. The role includes handling administrative and clinical tasks such as maintaining patient records, preparing examination rooms and patients, assisting physicians during exams, and collecting vital signs and past medical history.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities. The Medical Assistant is responsible for the following:
- Trains, mentors, and supervises clinical volunteers (Nurses, Medical Assistants, and EKG) in order to provide support as needed to medical providers as follows: Assists providers with patient examination, procedures, and treatment, Takes patient histories, conducts routine lab procedures, and prepares specimens for transport to the lab, & Follows up on test orders and reports results to provider and patient, provides and maintains patient education materials, and assists the Clinical Coordinator in the maintenance of medical equipment and supplies
- Creates and maintains patient electronic medical record (EMR)
- In the absence of volunteers, ensures medical providers are supported as needed.
- Assist volunteers in learning and completing the above duties and responsibilities.
- Complies with all OSHA, CLIA, and HIPAA regulations
- Performs other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS:
- Exceptional interpersonal skills
- Administrative and clerical skills, including comfort with electronic health record system and above average written and verbal communication skills
- Medical terminology use and understanding
- Equipment use and maintenance appropriate for the position
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Efficiently manage time, and use critical thinking skills
- Computer skills appropriate to position
- Clinical skills appropriate to position
- Equipment use and maintenance appropriate for position
- Bilingual preferred, but not required
Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements:
- Certified Medical Assistant preferred - If CMA is not available, we will also accept the following: EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) or Paramedic, NREMT (Nationally Recognized Emergency Medical Technician), LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse)
- High School or Equivalent
- Minimum two years of clinical experience

- Clinical: Clinical Coordinator Supervisor
- Operations/ HR: Director of Operations/Chief Operating Officer
Typical Physical Demands
- Prolonged sitting or standing may be required.
- Physical movements and the degree of mobility, manual dexterity, and hand-eye coordination normally associated with the practice of medical assisting in a modern primary healthcare setting will be performed on a repetitive basis.
- The ability to distinguish letters and symbols, as well as the ability to utilize telephone, computer terminals and copiers, is required.
- Work under stressful conditions as well as irregular hours may be required.
- Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, radiation and other conditions common to a clinical environment may routinely be encountered.
