Medical Billing and Collections Specialist
POSITION SUMMARY:
Handles billing and collections of Durable Medical Equipment for all primary and secondary payers whether it is Commercial, Managed Care, Medicaid or Medicare. Handles billing of balances due from all payers as well as following up on collections of balances due from all payers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Handles billing of payer claims (primary, secondary and tertiary) according to contract terms to include Medicare and Medicaid guidelines.
- Runs assigned daily billing reports to determine account needs and updates files with current billing information.
- Reviews and confirms that appropriate billing documentation has been obtained, including authorizations and Certificates of Medical Necessity (CMNs) as required.
- Maintains knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid guidelines and applies that knowledge to billing as required by individual contracts.
- Understands Medicaid, Medicare and Insurance billing, including coordination of benefits and appeals process for redeterminations.
- Performs systematic collections as directed by management.
- Enters call back notes into appropriate databases for future collection efforts and inter-departmental communications.
- Identifies, monitors and corrects rejected electronic and paper claims.
- Verifies outstanding account balances.
- Multi-tasks in various computer applications to gather billing and collection information.
- Reconciles open accounts to clearly establish patient responsibility.
- Performs follow up as necessary and re-bills according to collection policy.
- Prepare price adjustments and refunds as appropriate.
- Manages work queue in a timely and efficient manner resulting in resolved AR avoiding timely filing write offs.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience/Technical Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- AA Degree preferred but not required
- 3-5 years Medical Billing and Collections experience
- Strong knowledge of Medicare guidelines, Medicaid programs, Managed Care and Commercial contracting
- Good analytical skills and a high degree of accuracy
- Proficiency in Windows environment, with emphasis on Word and Excel
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Experience with multiple billing software/system conversions beneficial
