Full job description

Purpose

The Homebuyer Counselor role is critical to financially prepare families for home ownership and to support families that already own homes. This role will deliver top-notch customer service to families by helping them set financial goals to be mortgage ready, provide financial counseling to keep families in their homes, and assist families with completion of housing related applications. This position will strive to ensure families are prepared to have successful home ownership experience.

Responsibilities

  • Counsel potential and current families regarding their overall financial situation related to home ownership, budgeting, debt reduction, credit re-building and education.
  • Obtain and analyze credit, perform basic income calculations, asset, and collateral documentation in accordance with established policies.
  • Accurate record-keeping of counseling activities in Salesforce.
  • Assist families with the completion of mortgage and home repair loan applications.
  • Review loan applications, analyze credit history/reports, assess applicants’ capacity to repay debt and evaluate default risk for home loans.
  • Prepare paperwork and assist families in completing applications for home buyer down payment assistance.
  • Serve as liaison between banking partners and Habitat to complete required mortgage lending documentation for home buyer families.
  • Provide home buyer counseling services to homebuyers who find themselves behind on their mortgage, or who are facing a challenge to pay their monthly mortgage due to a change in their financial situation. Create payment plans for families to get back on track.
  • Generate and create program-related reports and dashboards.
  • Oversee office volunteers for special projects under this position’s purview.
  • Develop and maintain contacts with other agencies to assist families.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Knowledge of residential mortgage lending process and applications required.
  • 2-5 years of financial counseling experience preferred.
  • Obtain NCHEC Certification within 2 years of the start date.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office and CRM systems and software (Salesforce preferred)
  • A team player with a pleasant and encouraging attitude, who is flexible, quick thinking and able to work through challenges to figure out solutions.
  • Natural ability to develop and document processes to gain efficiency.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Superior time management and organizational skills, with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic team and to carry out tasks independently.
  • Ability to establish effective internal and external working relationships.
  • Ability to identify and establish priorities, work independently, and exercise sound judgment related to providing support and assistance.
  • Outstanding interpersonal communication skills which must be effective and courteous, requiring high integrity when dealing with a broad array of backgrounds.
  • Commitment to mission and values-driven work environment.
  • Bilingual is a plus.
