Full job description

Hopewell House is a 30+ year hospice institution in Portland now a residential care facility completely focused on end-of-life needs, with care for those who are dying and support for their families and loved ones. Typically, our residents are already in hospice and have a remaining life expectancy of 45 days or less.

Seeking fulltime certified nursing assistant (CNA) with availability for noc shifts on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, certified by the Oregon Board of Nursing to offer care to the end of life hospice residents at Hopewell House (HH). They also provide mental and emotional support to the residents and their family members. Benefits include health insurance at no cost to the employee with vision and dental, employee-led Employee Assistance Program, access to complementary services such as massage and reiki, and a supportive and empowering work environment.

Hourly rates start at $26 for noc shift depending on experience.

New hires receive a $250 signing bonus which is paid after 90 days of employment.

Education and Experience:

Required:

  • Graduation from a Certified Nursing Assistant Program.
  • Food Handlers Card
  • CPR/AED/First Aid

Preferred:

  • A minimum of two years’ experience as a CNA.
  • Experience working with hospice and/or palliative care residents/patients.
  • Experience caring for multiple patients on shift

Qualifications:

  • Unencumbered certification from the Oregon State Board of Nursing
  • No findings on the OBRA Federal CNA Registry or the OSBN CNA Abuse Registry
  • Successful passing of criminal background check
  • Proficient in reading and writing English

Duties

Provide total care and creates a model of hospitality for every HH resident and their loved ones.

In the spirit of Mindful Caregiving, have a willingness to accept constructive feedback or redirection in a positive manner, self reflect and show commitment to adapt behavior, performance or attitude.

Build and maintain positive, collaborative working relationships with visiting hospice team members.

Measure and record vital signs, such as, temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure of residents as needed.

Provide timely, accurate and detailed electronic charting on each resident that demonstrates specific levels of decline to support the visiting hospice team recertification process.

Assist in feeding residents at specific meal times and as requested.

Assist or provide the activities of daily living such as bath, mouth care and toileting on the residents’ preferred schedule.

Stay informed of changes in the field of hospice care in relation to your duties.

Participate in brief grounding exercises during shift transitions.

Comfort and provide emotional care for the residents and their families.

Respond to an emergency situation as appropriate.

Bring and remove meal trays for residents as they are ready from the kitchen staff.

Assist in keeping resident rooms clean and tidy.

Turn, position and ambulate assigned residents as needed and provide a second assist to other team members as needed.

Check blood sugar of residents as appropriate and notify the CMA or Nurse of results.

Keep HH Nurse and/or visiting hospice RN Case Manager abreast of any changes in residents’ condition.

Provide routine post-mortem care of the resident’s body.

Competent in the use of equipment used in the care of residents, such as the hospital beds, ceiling lift, sit-to-stand, wheelchair, walker and stretcher

Document in the resident electronic medical record, stay abreast of current service plans and assist clinical staff and volunteers as needed.

Maintains compliance with infection control protocols.

Participate in additional care duties as delegated by an RN.

Other duties as assigned.

Secondary Functions:

Assist with facilitating the “honoring of the body and the life” ceremony as the resident’s body leaves the facility.

Work closely and collaboratively as a team with HH volunteers.

Assist with housekeeping duties throughout HH, such as vacuuming, dusting, mopping/sweeping, stocking kitchenettes, etc.

Change bed linens and resident clothing as often as needed for the comfort of the resident.

Provide laundry services for residents and intermittently for family members or loved ones sleeping on property.
