Full job description
Asbury United Methodist Church
Position Description
Position Title: Youth Director - Part Time, about 20 hours per week
Reports To:
● Asbury United Methodist Church Senior Pastor
● Charge Conference Asbury United Methodist Church through the Staff Parish Relations Committee and Church Council
Primary Function:
● To serve as overseer of youth ministry so that the congregation may fulfill its mission as the body of Christ. Cultivate safe space in which youth can be the fullness of who God has created them to be, with a heart for social justice (fully inclusive of the LGBTQ+ community and advocating for racial reconciliation, justice, and equity).
Tasks and Responsibilities
1. Develop and lead programs according to the vision and purpose of the youth ministry. Meet weekly with the youth group during the academic year and at least 3 times during the summer.
● Create monthly outreach events.
● Plan at least bi-monthly spiritual growth programs, activities and events that include opportunities for youth to worship, fellowship with each other, study the Bible and apply it to their lives (spiritual growth).
● Plan at least quarterly service opportunities and a yearly week-long mission project in order to involve our youth in Christ-like service that impacts the lives of others (service and student leadership).
● Lead a Sunday Morning Small Group (bible study) and Sunday Evening Student Ministry during the academic year.
● In conjunction with the Lead Pastor, lead a Confirmation Program every other academic year. Confirmation includes a class that covers the entire academic year, a one on one mentoring program with youth and other adults in the congregation, holding monthly check-in meetings with parents and adult mentors during the program, and Confirmation Sunday.
2. Communicate the vision and values of the youth ministry to all volunteers, staff, and student leaders.
3. Recruit and regularly train volunteer leaders.
4. Model and encourage other adults in the congregation to build and maintain relationships with youth both churched and unchurched.
● Interact with youth outside regular meeting times. Including posting frequent social media posts on official youth group accounts and seeking out opportunities to support youth at their activities.
5. Build and maintain quality relationships with parents and guardians.
● Clearly share the vision with parents and guardians so they understand the purpose of the youth ministry. Often the youth director is the main connection the parents and guardians have to Asbury.
● Create avenues of consistent contact with parents and guardians (weekly email, long range calendars, updating youth ministry page on Asbury’s website, frequent social media posts on official youth group accounts, promo slides for Sunday announcements/webpage, annual parent meetings, semi-annual resourcing for parents and other interested persons about youth culture and how to best care for, protect, and disciple our youth).
● Provide opportunities for both congregants and parents/guardians to volunteer with youth programming.
● Maintain a relationship with Asbury’s Safe Sanctuary Coordinator to get adult volunteers required training and background checks to work with youth.
6. Develop and oversee the youth ministry budget.
● Set a budget that reflects the values in the vision and purpose.
● Be prudent with finances, sticking with the approved budget.
7. Involve students in the ministry of the church as a whole, supporting and participating in the church’s vision, worship services, and activities.
● Plan and lead monthly anti-racism programs, activities and events that include opportunities for youth and the congregation. The current group is called Be the Bridge.
8. Meetings and Reports
● Attend regular meetings with the Senior Pastor every other week and provide regular updates on the status of goals and ongoing needs of youth and their families.
● Attend regular staff meetings with Church Staff every other week.
● Provide monthly summaries on the status of youth ministry to the Church Council in advance of their monthly meetings.
9. Attend Sunday morning worship services during the academic year and at least twice per month during the summer.
Qualifications:
- At least a Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university (some theological or seminary education desired).
- Agree with Asbury’s vision, goals, LGBTQ+ inclusion and Anti-Racism values.
- Have a personal faith in Christ and be committed to Christ as Lord and Savior.
- Be a person in whom the congregation and community can place trust and confidence.
- Accept and keep the United Methodist Church Doctrinal Standards, discipline and authority.
- Nurture and cultivate their own spiritual disciplines and practice holiness.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Ability to pass background check (including driving record) and willingness to drive youth.
Salary and Benefits
● Compensation (salary) set annually by Charge Conference with consultation from Staff Parish Relations Committee.
● Receive reimbursement for professional and continuing education expenses up to an amount set in the youth budget approved by Charge Conference.
● Leave policy established by the Staff Parish Relations Committee.
Review
● Annual evaluation process carried out by Senior Pastor and representative from Staff Parish Relations Committee.
● Ongoing review through the Staff Parish Relations Committee.
