Full job description
Vermont Psychiatric Survivors (VPS) seeks to hire a full-time Patient Representative to advocate for patients in designated hospitals and residential recovery facilities and foster communication between patients and health care providers. We are seeking applicants around the Burlington area.
Patient Representatives educate individuals about their legal rights and assist individuals in completing formal grievances and paperwork; support and advocate for individuals with hospital staff, in treatment team meetings, and at court hearings; identify resources that address individual preferences and interests, and advocate for system-wide change.
VPS Patient Representatives use a non-judgmental, values-driven approach that promotes multiple perspectives, advocates for human rights and dignity, and focuses on genuine, mutual relationships.
Applicants must have lived experience with a mental health condition or experience being perceived as having a mental health condition, must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to listen without judgement or bias, must have a passion for and commitment to social justice, be computer literate, and have a knowledge of or willingness to learn about the mental health system, mental health law, community resources, non-violent communication, and intentional peer support. Applicants must have access to an insured and licensed vehicle, with a way to travel. Knowledge of the psychiatric survivor movement is desirable.
Vermont Psychiatric Survivors is an independent, statewide, mutual support and civil rights advocacy organization run by and for psychiatric survivors. We approach our work from a social justice, not social service orientation. Founded in 1983, our primary purpose is to ensure the equal rights, protection, and participation of individuals marginalized because of psychiatric labels. We offer mutual support to psychiatric survivors, publish a quarterly newspaper, and advocate and educate to resist and challenge discrimination.
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, age, protected veteran or disabled status, or genetic information.
