General Responsibilities
The president of the organization will have diverse duties, including the following:

Congressional and Regulatory Affairs

  • Interact with Congress.
  • Deal with Federal Regulatory Agencies, particularly USDA.
  • Select issues to pursue – deal with the association’s committees that have expertise in the issue to reach a consensus, if possible, on a position for the industry.
  • Lead Grassroots lobbying efforts on issues of importance to the industry.
  • Manage annual membership conference and other events as required.
  • Member Services
  • Organize (and invigorate) the annual convention.
  • Respond to general inquiries about legislation, regulations, and national issues.
  • Draft or oversee the preparation of testimony/comments to be submitted on behalf of industry on legislation and regulations.
  • Ensure preparation of association’s publications, including newsletter, tax updates and any economic studies.


  • Set the tone and climate for the organization, including its vision and work place environment.
  • Market and fundraise, in particular for national initiatives.
  • Administer and manage the organization.
  • Work with outside lawyer-lobbyist.
  • Work with outside accountant.
  • Work with Board of Trustees and Committees.
  • Administer Special “Marketing” Projects, ongoing and ad hoc.

Other Requirements

  • Education, professional experience (10 years of experience preferred, prior experience with similar responsibilities).
  • Budgetary or supervisory experience required.
  • Domestic travel required.
  • Headquartered in Washington, DC.
