Organization
The CAN Council is a regional nonprofit organization dedicated to the prevention of child abuse and neglect through its nationally accredited and evidence-based education, intervention, and advocacy programs. Founded in 1979, the CAN Council has consistently grown to meet the needs of the community’s children and families, providing services as three discrete 501(c)(3) non-profit entities for Arenac/Bay, Huron, and Saginaw counties. Position
The President and CEO will lead CAN Council’s strategic planning processes and communicate, implement, and sustain strategic initiatives. They will execute the company’s vision, establish policies & procedures, and secure & allocate resources to optimize operations. They identify emerging trends and pursue new initiatives to accomplish the organizational mission.
The President/CEO is responsible for all internal operations and external relationships, articulating the compelling mission and vision to all stakeholders. They report to and work closely with the Board of Directors in achieving organizational objectives and direct the leadership team's professional development and performance management.
The primary work location is the CAN Council Saginaw office. Travel within Bay, Huron, and Saginaw counties is required, as is routine work beyond the traditional workday.

Board Leadership & Development
- Oversee the recruitment, development, and support of a strong and engaged Board of Directors to execute all Bylaws.
- Communicate effectively with the Board providing all information necessary for the Board’s fiduciary and oversight responsibilities.
- Drive fundraising efforts in concert with the Board and staff.
- Work with the Board and its committees, liaise between the Board and staff, and guide Board development.
Operational Leadership, Administration and Management
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of six program directors, who oversee the work of 30+ FTE employees and contracted staff.
- Orchestrate program directors and contractors in the planning, implementation, and management of all aspects of CAN Council including finance and administration, HR, marketing and communications, quality outcomes management, business development, and strategic initiatives across all four programs.
- Direct efforts to ensure communication and cooperation between programs.
- Provide vision for and lead the organization’s strategic planning efforts and budgetary prioritization.
- Develop new business budgets and measure the efficacy of expansion opportunities.
- Ensure the provision of quality services for all individuals supported through the organization.
- Offer training opportunities to expand staff capability and deliver measurable impact over time.
- Track and deliver superior results.
- Demonstrate respect for all individuals, honoring diversity, equity & inclusion in the workplace.
- Serve as the organizational spokesperson for media and at CAN Council events.
- Fulfill the responsibilities of the organization’s Civil Rights Officer.
Contract/Regulatory Compliance
- Maintain familiarity, knowledge, and compliance with all contractual obligations and ensure standards are met.
- Ensure compliance leadership is competent, effective, and current.
Strategic Planning and Collaboration
- Strategic planning implementation and regular reporting on progress and challenges encountered.
- Active involvement in regional and statewide organizations that contribute to the organization’s development.
- Engage in community collaboratives to inform the work of the CAN Council and to promote the collective work of systems supporting child abuse and neglect prevention and survivorship.
- Work to strengthen partnerships and foster new ones, engage and work alongside state elected officials, MDHHS leadership, foundation executives, Family Court Judges and their staff, government agencies, advocacy groups, and community-based organizations in strategic collaboration to improve and enhance the lives of children.
- Broad understanding of social, economic, and environmental factors that influence health and quality of life for individuals who have experienced child abuse or neglect.
- In-depth knowledge of child welfare and family court systems, multidisciplinary teams, and child abuse and neglect.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree required with expertise in Nonprofit Management, Public Health, Business Management, or related field.
- Minimum of 5-10 years in a senior leadership role within a nonprofit, healthcare, or social services organization.
- Demonstrable public relations and donor relations experience required.
- Extensive knowledge and expertise in public and private human services and education systems, abuse and neglect, related policy issues, budget development, and financial oversight.
- Experience with grant development and contract negotiations.
- Exceptional relationship management skills with the ability to build and grow connections with people from all backgrounds.
- Success working with a Board of Directors and funders with the ability to cultivate new and existing relationships.
- Experienced transformational leader committed to influencing change to support the mission.
- A consensus builder and team player.
