Full job description

We are seeking a talented Principal Metallurgist to join the CorePower Magnetics team. With rapid growth and a broad portfolio of patents in new soft magnetic materials and advanced manufacturing processes, CorePower Magnetics brings to market a step change in magnetic core performance with up to 10x weight reduction, up to 5x volume reduction, and up to 2x loss reduction of engineered magnetic components. CorePower Magnetics’ technology can have broad implications across grid modernization efforts and electric vehicles and aviation through its smaller, lighter, more efficient components.

The Principal Metallurgist will be responsible for developing and scaling metallurgical processes related to the production and processing of CorePower Magnetics soft magnetic materials. A specific near-term emphasis will be placed upon design, installation, and commissioning of a strip caster and downstream annealing equipment for our pilot facility.

Responsibilities:

  • Drive development and scaling of planar flow casting, strain annealing, testing, and other metallurgical processing related to development and production of soft magnetic materials such as amorphous and nanocrystalline ribbon
  • Effectively lead capital expense projects related to metallurgical processing equipment, including defining requirement and engaging stakeholders in the design and implementation of the equipment and processes
  • Work closely with internal engineers, suppliers, and all other stakeholders to effectively modify, build, or improve processes and equipment.
  • Develop standards for material quality to be applied to both internal and externally sourced material (e.g. nanocrystalline ribbon) and maintain test data relative to these standards
  • Develop and support the documentation and filing of intellectual property based upon novel concepts developed.
  • Stay informed of latest external technology developments related to soft magnetic materials and support senior leadership in developing strategies to address threats and opportunities.
  • Train and provide assistance and guidance to less experienced personnel related to materials properties and processing
  • Track and continuously improve manufacturing processes through application of statistical methods and design of experiments
  • Conduct problem solving exercises including restoring safe, quality flow and determining root cause and corrective actions to process related deviations.
  • Manage and execute tasks according to agreed upon deadlines while meeting expectations on quality of work.
  • Maintain a safe working environment by upholding current policies and procedures and contributing to the development of new standards as the company grows.
  • Perform all other duties as required

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 4-year degree. Materials Science and Engineering required with Ph.D. in the same or similar field preferred (equivalent experience may be considered)
  • Strong experience in metallurgical casting and heat-treating processes, preferentially with amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys
  • Familiarity with soft magnetic materials such as amorphous and nanocrystalline alloys, ferrites, and bulk crystalline alloys is preferred
  • Six Sigma/Lean Manufacturing experience is preferred
  • Proficient in use of MS Office
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong orientation toward a Continuous Improvement mindset
  • Proven dedication to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers. Capable of engaging with stakeholders to surface needs and translate into actions
  • Oriented toward action with motivation derived from solving challenging design problems
  • Capable of coordinating multiple activities at once. Organizes and utilizes time and resources effectively to accomplish goals

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $90,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
