Job Title:Tutčint Program Coordinator

Reports to: Administration Team

Job Type: Non-exempt; Regular full time

Location: San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles, in-person, some travel, some hybrid schedule

Position Summary:

Pukúu Cultural Community Services (Pukúu) is seeking a Program Coordinator (PC) for the Tutčint Indigenous Youth Programs to uplift Native American and Indigenous Youth by providing academic support, promoting holistic wellness, culture and community connections. In this role the PC will plan, direct and/or coordinate the activities of the two Tutčint Programs including oversight of recruitment/ retention, enrollment, case management, data collection/evaluation, budget management, outcomes and reporting. This position is headquartered at a local park and requires some local travel, adhering to a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends. The PC serves as a role model to youth and a driven Tutčint Team.

About the Program:

“TUTČINT: Tarahat Uplifting Trauma-Informed & Community-led Interventions for Native Teens,” is a youth development program offering activities and services in San Fernando for youth. Pukuu's two youth programs:

  • Tutcint Youth Empowerment: Middle school to high school ages youth created with three main goals: 1) increase cultural competency, 2) reduce incarceration and recidivism, and 3) improve academic success.
  • Tutcint Health Youth Leadership: High School through young adults navigating youth advocacy and empowerment.

Tutčint provides a continuum of direct and indirect services to each individual child, family, and community. These services include academic/education, mental health, behavioral health, and mentoring on a weekly basis with occasional weekend outings.

Primary Job Duties:

The Program Coordinator may expect the following:

1. Workplans

  • Program Coordinator (PC) coordinates to continuously improve office culture, programming, events, policies and procedures with culturally relevant, trauma informed, and evidence-based practices.
  • Represents Tutčint / Pukúu at programs and functions to coordinate and network activities with other Tribal, non-profit, and government agencies.
  • Schedule staffing for programs which are conducted during day, evening and weekend hours.
  • Fiscal responsibilities include ordering of program supplies, expense requests and budget oversight of various grants.
  • Work with various grants to expend and request funds appropriately and submit reports to funders.

2. Case Management

  • Conducts timely and thorough intake and follow-up meetings with community, such as foster youth, children from families with low-income, and families whose language may act as a barrier to accessing community resources and services.
  • Reviews, processes, maintains, and secures on-site case management data such as intake forms, case files, and current case notes in digital database.
  • Coordinates case management sessions with youth participants.

3. Data and Evaluation

  • Conducts revisions to completed program intake and evaluation forms.
  • Responsible for coordinating Program Evaluator (PE) to research, develop, deliver, and collect evidence-based data from community.
  • Oversee the maintenance of confidential records, data, and submits quarterly reports.

4. Programming

  • Plans Trauma-Informed, data-driven workshops, and/or cultural wellness workshops and activities.
  • Engages youth and community with trauma-informed, culturally-relevant, and data-driven workshops and activities.

5. Outreach, recruitment retention

  • Coordinates and collaborates for the development of publicity materials for various events and design, create, remediate, and upload content on program website.
  • Responsible for reporting abuse, as a mandated reporter which includes immediately reporting any concerns with respect to violation of a person's rights, actual and/or suspected abuse.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Required

  • Strong commitment to Pukúu / Tutčint’s principles and objectives.
  • Excellent work ethic: time management, organized, punctual, good judgment, and interpersonal skills.
  • Outstanding analytical, oral, writing, public speaking, and facilitation skills.
  • Must have a valid California Driver’s License, personal transportation, and be insurable to drive company vehicles.
  • Must have intermediate skillset with Microsoft applications.
  • Experience working with youth and/or families.

Desired

  • Experience working with a Native American organization, community group, or Tribe.
  • Two years of experience in a social service agency, foundation, or school district working with parents and community agencies providing social services.
  • Two years of experience working with children ages 10-17 from the Native American and Indigenous/Latinx community.
  • One year of staff supervising experience.
  • Outstanding organizational skills.
  • Outdoor recreational leadership skills that include hiking, swimming, camping in group setting.
  • Proficient in Spanish conversation, reading, and writing.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in social work, psychology, public health, special education, American Indian Studies, or related field or equivalent education and experience; or
  • Master's Degree in social work, child development or related field and minimum 1 year youth /family experience
  • Will consider education and experience.

Setting, Policies and Requirements: Pukúu Cultural Community Services is a Native American serving non-profit corporation, which provides social services, youth services, health education, cultural programming, and outdoor environmental programming. The Tutčint Program Coordinator will operate in multiple environment settings, including but not limited to, a professional office environment, indoor/outdoor event spaces, and/or driving vehicles for programmatic needs.

In the office setting, this position is classified as a sedentary environment with walking and standing regularly for routine use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets. Exerting up to twenty pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Walking and standing are required regularly in the office, programming, and at outreach events. The outdoor field work routinely uses tools, power equipment and mobile phones in outdoor or remote areas. Programing will require recreational activities to include exposure to outdoor weather conditions and loud noises, while requiring the exertion of more than twenty-five pounds of force to frequently/constantly lift, carry, push, handle/feel or otherwise move objects. Regularly talking and hearing with staff and community. Moderate noise level in the office setting and loud noise level in outreach events.

The employee must be able to safely drive him/herself locally, which may also require travel for youth programming, training courses and/or conferences. Travel distances may vary between 1-100 miles each way based on location, generally in the greater Los Angeles area.

The successful applicant will meet requirements of background/fingerprint clearance, U.S. work authorization, insurance driving requirements, possess vehicle for reliable transportation, acceptable DMV record to maintain auto insurance coverage, pass a drug test, maintain a drug free workplace, and abide by all applicable laws. All employees must comply with Pukúu’s workplace and contractual policies.

This position develops, maintains, and is responsible for safeguarding electronic and hardcopy files containing sensitive client and proprietary information. The Program Coordinator must maintain confidentiality of all work product or files pertaining to Pukúu Cultural Community Services, and the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians, tribal departments, citizens, and all other material that may identify individuals/organizations by name (either directly or by reference), as set forth by the Tribe and Pukúu, including adherence to a professional code of conduct and laws, such as HIPAA and case law. Any violation in this matter may result in immediate termination of employment.
