Recognizing the tremendous need to provide mental health support to teens, the Friendship Circle of Pittsburgh launched The Beacon as a dedicated space focused on the well-being and mental health of high school-age teens. With its emphasis on inclusion, community building, and peer support, The Beacon aims to fight the stigma around mental health, and offer teens strategies they can use to support themselves and one another. The Beacon is open to any high school-age student in the region, of all faiths and backgrounds. Teen-led and peer-led, The Beacon’s programming will prioritize mindfulness, creative outlets, and cues to teach youth ways to check in with themselves and monitor their mental health.

Here is how you will make an impact:

  • Ensures efficient planning, running, and reviewing of individual member experience at The Beacon.
  • Recruits, managed intake process, and is point of contact for members and families
  • Engages with teens while in the space and is adept at providing brief group and 1-1 therapeutic conversations and support.
  • Provides effective and brief therapeutic interventions with teen members who are seeking support.
  • Provides required documentation in a timely manner, which may include member intake, follow-up or safety planning.
  • Adheres to agency policies, procedures, and professional code of ethics.
  • Thorough understanding of mandated reported protocols.
  • Skilled in crisis intervention
  • Coordinates and supports teen programming and engagement.
  • Managing the space at The Beacon
  • Admin work related to the facility (ex: mail, utilities, billing, stocking fridge and other supplies, etc.)
  • Manages Teen Wellness committee
  • Manages The Beacon social media
  • Oversees wellness functions of The Friendship Circle

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, or Mental Health field (MSW/LSW/LCSW, LPC, PsyD, MPH, MEd etc.)
  • Minimum work experience: 3 years
  • Experience working with teen population.
  • At least 1 year of experience working with people with disabilities is preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of inclusive mental health care.
  • Crisis intervention training and ability to assess for Red Flags

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence; able to develop strong relationships with coworkers, families, vendors, and community members.
  • Excellent ability to connect with teenagers
  • Ability to provide unbiased and flexible approaches to supporting different mental health needs of the members
  • A resourceful self-starter who takes initiative to quickly assimilate and apply new knowledge.
  • Independent decision maker and self-motivator.
  • Strong ethics.
  • Builds trust, honors commitments, and treats all with respect. Uses those skills to accurately accomplish tasks by the deadlines.

  • Possesses basic computer skills and support capacity in MS Office Suite, Windows Desktop OS, MS Office operating systems, and related hardware and software.
