Project Developer II/III
FLSA Classification: Exempt
Salary Range: $100,000.00 - $140,000.00 plus performance-based bonuses
Reports to: Director of Development

About Us:

U.S. Light Energy is searching for a Project Developer to join our New York team working out of our office in Latham, NY. U.S. Light Energy is a growing and dynamic company in the solar renewable energy industry, focused on Community Solar in the Northeastern United States. We believe that everyone should have access to clean, renewable energy, and the most equitable way to achieve that is through human-scaled Community Solar projects that meet a community's energy and climate goals at the local level. We have more than 550MWs of New York Community Solar projects in development and are currently building out these projects and actively adding additional generation capacity.

Job Description:

This position is an opportunity to join a growing Solar Development company in an impactful role. Our ideal candidate will be an ambitious, personable, highly organized, and creative problem-solver with excellent communication skills. Candidates must have the ability and composure to manage multiple projects in parallel while addressing changing demands of our industry, partners, and communities.

The Project Developer is vital to our organization and will contribute directly to the success of the company by overseeing project opportunities from site control to commercial operation. The project developer will leverage the support of our experienced operations team to move projects effectively and efficiently through the municipal and utility approval process. During the development process, the Project Developer will be the main contact for our Partners, Towns, and Landowners for Portfolios ranging between 50-100MW in size.

A successful Project Developer will demonstrate a passion for renewable energy and problem solving. Candidates must have strong writing, analytical, and Presentation skills.

Essential functions:

  • Develop solar energy projects greater than 1MW
  • Analyze the impact of the ever-changing regulatory and market conditions while adjusting strategy as necessary to ensure projects success.
  • Work with internal teams to identify the most appropriate technical and financial solutions for project success.
  • Efficiently and effectively communicate both technical and financial project information internally and externally to our partners.
  • Confidently and enthusiastically lead board and community discussions related to project approvals with AHJs.
  • Monitor market conditions and expand relationships with appropriate municipal, regulatory, and utility officials to understand the project approval process and best practices within the project environment.
  • Consult with local and state officials to identify necessary decommissioning, operational, and Tax requirements for projects to update our financial models as needed.
  • Participate in industry working groups and develop relationships within to remain current with regulations and incentives structures.

  • Must have strong contractual and deal making negotiation experience
  • Must have a high degree of professionalism and strong work ethic
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Must combine a highly analytical and creative approach to problem solving
  • Ability to work alongside town boards, utility commissions, and customers at all levels
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise with internal and external colleagues
  • Extensive experience with Salesforce or other CRM software Trends

Travel required:

This role is expected to travel up to 40% of the time including municipality meetings, events, and industry conferences as. Travel is via personal automobile with occasional automobile rental and air travel to events and industry conferences. Sometimes travel is with limited notice.

Required education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, finance, economics, renewable energy, or related field.
  • Knowledge of related programs and policies in the Northeast U.S.
  • 2-5+ years of related experience in project development with a proven track record of success
  • Valid Driver’s License
