Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in nursing with current active unencumbered SD/compact license is required. Ability to adapt to unfamiliar and changing environments. Ability to multitask, managing time effectively and efficiently with frequent interruptions. Possess both problem solving and self-motivation skills. Conduct interviews of a highly personal nature while keeping personal biases in check. Ability to use technology and related tools. Ability to maintain composure, using diplomacy and effectively de-escalate hostile encounters. Basic skills of crisis counseling, ability to maintain confidentiality and clinical judgment as to when to refer cases to resources if needed. Basic understanding of medical terminology and principles of exposure, infection, infectious period, potentially infectious interactions, symptoms of disease, pre-symptomatic and asymptomatic infection. Ability to manage, compile, analyze, and present data. Excellent and sensitive interpersonal, cultural sensitivity, and interviewing skills such that they can build and maintain trust with interviewees, and health care professionals while developing relationships and/or partnerships.

Summary of Work: The Disease Intervention Specialist – Registered Nurse (DIS-RN) role involves complex professional work that includes clinical judgement, critical thinking and assessment skills for investigation, prevention, and control of communicable diseases. The public health professional will apply expertise in client-centered interviews, collection of enhanced surveillance and community assessment data, partner services to include contact tracing, directly observed therapy, field specimen collection, field investigation in outbreaks and in emergency preparedness, community outreach, collaboration with medical providers, and navigation of health care systems to ensure patient evaluation and treatment. Relevant program areas include Immunizations, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Tuberculosis (TB), and other communicable disease, outbreak investigation, and emergency preparedness and response.

Major Duties:

  • Assesses the health and health care needs of families and individuals who would benefit from health promotion or who are at identified risk of illness, disability, or premature death.
  • Develops intervention strategies with the community to meet identified needs that take into account available resources, the range of activities that contribute to health and the prevention of illness, disability, and premature death.
  • Evaluates services to determine the extent to which interventions have an impact on the health status of individuals and families.
  • Assesses the health and health care needs of individuals who contract or are at risk for infectious diseases.
  • Conducts investigations to determine the origin of the infectious disease by interviewing contacts, inspecting client’s activities, living situations, and other factors.
  • Evaluates treatment options that best fit the individual’s needs and resources available.
  • Follows up with clients to provide support, treatment, and information to aid client in treating the infection(s).
  • Performs investigations relating to the occurrence, causes, control, and prevention of communicable diseases or illnesses to ensure treatment is received and to prevent the spread of disease or illnesses.

Pay: $60,000.00 - $64,000.00 per year
