Full job description

Overview:
This position is the most visible face of the Repairs Program. They have the communication skills, organizational ability, and technical know-how to independently operate a repairs site safely and efficiently. They operate their sites as participants, not observers, and lead by example.

Responsibilities & Duties:

  • Operate repair site(s) by mobilizing vehicles and equipment from the Habitat warehouse, collecting necessary materials, opening the site(s), performing or leading the work, cleaning/organizing the site, closing/securing the site, and returning vehicles and equipment to the Durham Habitat warehouse.
  • Perform/lead carpentry and other tasks (excavation, concrete, minor plumbing, minor electrical, etc.) necessary to advance each job.
  • Work with Repairs Manager and Repairs Project Manager to plan and track labor, material, and equipment use for each project.
  • Train and supervise lower lever staff member(s) – Assistant/Apprentice/AmeriCorps.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with homeowners, subcontractors, and colleagues.
  • Ensure that all vehicles, tools, and equipment are securely stored during non-work hours.
  • Clean and maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Assist HFHD and construction team with other projects as needed.

Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience (full time) in residential construction, especially modifications or repairs to older homes.

Specific Skills:

  • Demonstrated skill with common carpentry tools.
  • Demonstrated understanding of basic framing and finish carpentry.
  • Ability to operate Habitat vehicles (driver’s license and clean driving record)
  • Ability and willingness to use ladders and work in roofs, attics, and crawlspaces.
  • Ability and willingness to train and/or supervise workers with little or no construction experience.
