What You Will Do

The Research Engineer will be responsible for designing, running, and reporting on experiments and tests of Metalmark materials and air cleaner systems in an iterative R&D, scale-up, and commercialization process. They will also be involved in new product development. The ideal candidate should have a demonstrated ability to work efficiently in an R&D and prototyping laboratory, be a technically advanced, and highly motivated self-starter who can apply their skills to complex problems. The candidate should be highly adaptable to a fast-paced environment and be resourceful in adapting and leveraging available equipment, test systems, and materials. Strong work ethics, excellent self-management skills, and team player capabilities are required. The Research Engineer will be expected to contribute to multiple research projects simultaneously, communicate with senior scientists and engineers to understand requirements and business challenges synthesize data, and present findings and results clearly and concisely.

What You Need

  • Develop and conduct experiments using Metalmark’s proprietary materials and systems to evaluate their performance and potential applications.
  • Design and build experimental setups or systems possibly involving sensors, data collection, gas flow control, gas analysis, automation, heating, gas filtration, and more.
  • Work collaboratively with the product engineering team to design, develop, and test air cleaning products.
  • Testing and screening Metalmark’s materials and systems for air purification applications.
  • Design and optimize testing methodologies to ensure the reliability, validity, and reproducibility of experimental results.
  • Analyze, interpret, and present experimental data using statistical tools and software, such as Excel, MATLAB, and Python.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and publications to communicate experimental findings and recommendations to a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and managers.
  • Work efficiently and safely in an R&D and prototyping laboratory, following standard operating procedures and quality control guidelines.
  • Collaborate with other research associates and senior researchers to support the development and innovation of Metalmark’s materials and systems.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
  • Investigative mind for developing practical solutions to real-world problems.
  • Good with tools and experience in building experimental systems.
  • Working knowledge of general electrical, control, and data-logging methods.
  • Clear and precise recording and reporting of experiments and data.
  • Excellent knowledge of good laboratory practices.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written, detail oriented.
  • Capability to work independently and as a team player.
  • Project management training and experience are highly desirable.
  • Capability to interact efficiently with internal and external partners and collaborators.
  • Coding capabilities and experience in Python and/or other languages preferred.
  • Experience with design tools such as SolidWorks a plus.

Other Requirements:

  • The candidate must be able to work in chemical and measurement laboratory environments and will work around compressed gases, vacuum pumps, acids, solvents and other chemicals.

Location

This person will work out of Metalmark's Cambridge, MA location, which is easily accessible by public transit from Harvard Square and other parts of the Greater Boston area. Local shuttle runs from Alewife T Station. It is also well-served by bike lanes. No or very limited parking available in the area.
