This position is federally funded by USDA Evans-Allen Grant.

The individual will be housed in the 1890 Research Building office located in Orangeburg, SC.

The individual must have the ability to perform duties on own initiative while receiving minimal supervision. The employee must be able to use good judgment in making decisions, exhibit a good working relationship with people, and highly dependable in planning, implementing, and reporting activities. Individual must be able to relate to diverse disadvantaged rural/urban people as well as professionals.

A valid driver's license is required.

Research Technician Assistant Job Position Description

Objective: The research Technician will conduct research under the supervision of the Research Scientist/Project Director and assist with coordinating student research activities in Industrial Hemp and other emerging crops. Research Technician will be responsible for assisting the research scientist in a variety of non-administrative tasks which will include but not limited to ordering and preparing resources, materials for the research, documenting results, in support of the research activities.

The supervising Research Scientist will be responsible for providing ongoing feedback and a formal assessment at the conclusion of the assistantship.

Specific Duties: These duties align with research goals and objectives as determined by the Research Scientist/Project Director.

The responsibilities of the research assistant include:

· Assisting with all research activities (planning and execution of planned research goals, monitoring protocols, establishing, and planting/monitoring of field plots)

· Data collection from demonstration research sites

· Soil samples collection from experimental plots for testing and monitoring of pH, electrical conductivity (EC), soil moisture content, and nutrient analysis, especially NKP.

· Monitoring of planted seedlings and collection of observational data and empirical measurements on the following:

  • growth rate
  • disease manifestation
  • flower bud initiation and maturation
  • Collection of leaf samples for determination of variations in CBD and THC concentrations.

· Data entry

·Training on data interpretation.

· Assisting with literature review and preparation of conferences and meeting documents for the student interns and Research Scientist.

· Occasional weekend and after hour research activities may will be involved.

  • Assisting with writing and editing materials for publication of research data.
  • Meets with research supervisor on regular basis to maintain ongoing communication regarding the quality of the assistant’s performance.

Qualifications: Education/Experience

BS or MS degree holder with experience and authority in the subject matter of the research project in question.


·Subject knowledge and oral/written communication skills to discuss and document research progress.

·Ability to work independently, accurately and to problem solve technical and methodological issues that arise during the research. Ability to work in team setting and supervise undergraduate students.

· Ability to apply sound research techniques, methodology and logical critical analysis. Strong organization and interpersonal skills.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $42,000.00 per year
