Job Title: Residential HVAC Service/Install Technician

Branch/Department: Residential HVAC

Job Classification: Non-Exempt, Full-Time

Position Purpose
Installation, service and repair on gas and electric furnaces, a/c systems, conventional and geothermal heat pumps, ductless mini split heat pumps, hot water and steam boilers, humidifiers, air cleaners, zoning controls and electrical/mechanical controls. Emergency service on call rotation at our discretion determined by level of skills.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties

Service heating and air conditioning systems.

  • Inspect and test system to verify system compliance with manufacturers specifications and to detect and locate any malfunctions.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment and change filters.
  • Repair heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Perform system diagnostic to determine repairs required.
  • Formulate repair quote to get approval before proceeding.
  • Repair or replace defective equipment, components or wiring.
  • Reassemble and test equipment following repairs.
  • Collect for quoted repairs via mobile device.
  • Record and report all faults, deficiencies and repairs, as well as the time and materials expended on service calls.

Install heating and air conditioning systems

  • Read and interpret job specific paperwork to ascertain the configuration of heating or cooling equipment components and to ensure the proper installation of work sold to the customer.
  • Disconnect and remove existing systems.
  • Cut and drill holes in floors, walls and roof to install equipment, using power saws and drills.
  • Fabricate, assemble and install ductwork and chassis parts, using portable metal-working tools and welding equipment. Communicate measurements to Sheet Metal department for fabrication of any sheet metal ducting or fittings required.
  • Assemble, position and mount heating or cooling equipment.
  • Install auxiliary components to heating-cooling equipment, such as expansion valves, air ducts, pipes, blowers, dampers and flues.
  • Measure, cut, thread and bend pipe or tubing, using pipefitter’s tools. Join pipes or tubing to equipment and to fuel, water or refrigerant source, to form complete circuit. Test pipe or tubing joints and connections for leaks.
  • Install, connect and adjust thermostats, humidistats and timers, using hand tools. Lay out and connect electrical wiring between controls and equipment according to wiring diagram, using electrical hand tools. Test electrical circuits and components for continuity, using electrical test equipment. Adjust system controls to settings recommended by manufacturer to balance system.
  • Read and comprehend all manufacturers’ installation/operation manuals.
  • Safety
  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable local, state and federal safety standards.
  • Comply with company health and safety procedures (HSP’s)

Significant challenges critical to success in this job:

  • Knowledge in HVAC, sheet metal, electrical, as well as plumbing processes.
  • Ability to communicate well with customers and work well with co-workers.
  • Ability to think ahead in the process and to work at a quick efficient pace all day long.
  • Communicate with different departments and staff continuously.
  • Work with in-house contacts to complete necessary documentation of job tasks and other cross-training to learn all aspects of the profession.

Qualifications

Training, education or certification:

  • Vocation certification in Heating and Air.
  • Licensed by the City of Topeka. Journeyman and apprentice each have specific continuing education requirements to maintain.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repairs and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings and other structures.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing and sheet metal processes.

Experience:

  • Depends on the level of skill and certification.

Skills and abilities:

  • Skill in analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Ability to determine causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals and wiring diagrams.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Exerts 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently. Required walking or standing to a significant degree; or requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls.
