The Climbing Instructor’s (CI) role is to provide an amazing experience for our community members. The CI is the primary climbing mentor for class participants, introducing climbing as both a sport and a community through engaging courses and instructional offerings. The CI manages risk both inside and outside class environments (pursuant to the risk management protocol), providing industry-leading instruction and inspiring experiences to all students and guests.

● Strictly adheres to BKB and Climbing Wall Instructor standards at all times within the gym
● Teach classes as qualified and scheduled to do so: o Evening/Weekend availability required
● Exercise risk management both in your classes and in the gym as a whole
● Act as an ambassador for the BKB brand and the sport of climbing
● Teach a minimum of 2 non-workshop classes per week


o You will be able and available to work more based on business needs, so long as scheduling needs are communicated to you in advance

● Be a connector and mentor to our community when in the facility
● Stay up-to-date on all gear, technical skills and techniques, company policies and curriculum guidelines
● Teach engaging and high quality classes that offer a varied and knowledgeable education in the sport of climbing and the BKB community o Ensure you’re following the climbing class curriculums provided to you by the

Lead Instructor
● Communicate with class participants as required
● Be an active climber
● Attend mandatory trainings as required
● Teach climbers about personal responsibility, protecting themselves and others from harm
● Use good judgment and exercise common sense
● All other duties as required

● Manage your class experience from check-in to check-out
● Ensure completion of waivers for first guest visitors
● Ensure that classes start on time
● Ensure that all students have checked in and paid for their class
● Effectively manage risk throughout the entire class experience
● Engage participants in the class curriculum and use teaching tactics like mirroring and modeling to convey information in an experiential way
● Avoid long periods of lecturing where possible
● Recommend next steps to participants, based on their interests and abilities and on BKB’s class pathway
● Leave teaching areas tidy, organized and ready for the next class in accordance with program standards
● Enter all class details where appropriate in the participants database profile (auto-belay cert, lead cert etc)

● Prior instruction/teaching experience preferred
● Climbing experience beyond the level of the classes you’re expected to teach
● The ability to manage time and people
● An outgoing and engaging personality

AMGA Climbing Wall Instructor certification (if not certified at time of hire)
