About Us: The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, and community green spaces across the country.

Position Overview:

The SCA Fellow Intern will play a vital role in SCA Pittsburgh’s high school programming. As an SCA Fellow, you will gain valuable hands-on experience in developing and delivering environmental education curricula. This opportunity provides an excellent opportunity to develop skills, network, and make a positive impact on the environment. This fellowship will include days that are required to work from the SCA Pittsburgh office, at regional high schools, and remotely. All SCA Fellow Interns will operate as a cohort, participating in orientation, training, and ongoing check-ins together over the twelve-week period.

Location: Pittsburgh, PA

Duration: January 8, 2024 – March 29, 2024 (12 Weeks, 25 hours per week)

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in planning, organizing, and delivering environmental education for high school students.
  • Collaborate with SCA Urban Green staff across the country to learn best practices and familiarize yourself with educational resources currently utilized by other urban programs.
  • Compile a single national database of environmental education materials used by Urban Green programs.
  • Engage with regional teachers and school staff to determine their environmental education needs and promote awareness of SCA’s during-school-time programming.
  • Create a scaffolded series of hands on and grade appropriate environmental education lesson plan series.
  • Deliver pilot program of your environmental education series.
  • Use feedback and experience to edit the environmental education series.
  • Attend and actively participate in needed orientation, meetings, training sessions, and check-ins.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of current SCA curriculum, proposed curriculum, and meetings with school staff.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and guidelines while working with youth.
  • Perform any other duties related to environmental education as required.

Qualifications:

  • Live in the Pittsburgh area.
  • Work experience designing and delivering hands on environmental education to middle and high school aged youth.
  • Previous experience developing formalized lessons plans utilizing a backward planning framework, such as Understanding by Design.
  • Strong passion for teaching.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team and independently.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, database management,
  • Willingness to learn, adapt, and tackle new challenges with enthusiasm.
  • Ability to commit to the full duration of the Fellow internship and attend necessary orientation, trainings, check-ins, and meetings.
  • Commitment to adhering to safety procedures and environmental ethics.
  • Access to a computer, reliable internet connectivity and ability to work in a variety of environments.
