About Us: The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, and community green spaces across the country.

Position Overview:

The SCA Fellow Intern will play a vital role in the National Capital Region Programs Team by contributing to our local recruitment initiatives. As an SCA Fellow, you will gain valuable hands-on experience in outreach, communications, recruiting, and creating data management systems. This position provides an excellent opportunity to develop skills, network, and make a positive impact on the environment. This intern will be a liaison between our regional SCA programs and local youth/young adult groups, including schools, community centers, and other community organizations. All SCA Fellow Interns will operate as a cohort, participating in orientation, training, and ongoing check-ins together over the twelve-week period.

Department: Community Programs

Location: Hybrid remote/in-person at DC-area high schools for recruitment events

Duration: January 8, 2024 – March 29, 2024 (12 Weeks, 25 hours per week)

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, organize, and execute a series of in-person information sessions to classes at targeted DC, MD, and VA high schools to promote awareness of local SCA programs
  • Assist in building contact databases for high school youth recruitment in DC, MD, and VA
  • Assist in outreach to schools, community centers, individuals, and other organizations by distributing recruitment flyers to targeted communities, corresponding with career counselors and school contacts, and sending targeted email blasts
  • Support Program Coordinator with tabling and other in-person recruitment events and virtual information sessions about upcoming summer programs
  • Research existing programs that capture local youth/young adults and identify potential partners for future recruitment
  • Draft content for a social media campaign targeted at summer high school recruitment
  • Represent SCA in a positive and professional manner at in-person events to build brand awareness in the community
  • Perform other duties required by Program Coordinator or Program Manager

Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in or recent graduation from a college or university program in communications, education, environmental science, or other related fields.
  • Strong passion for environmental conservation, education, and community engagement.
  • Experience working with high school students preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written – email management preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team and independently.
  • Basic knowledge of MS suite, proficiency in Excel preferred.
  • Experience with public speaking is a plus.
  • Experience with social media campaigns is a plus.
  • Willingness to learn, adapt, and tackle new challenges with enthusiasm.
  • Ability to commit to the full duration of the Fellow internship and attend necessary orientation, trainings, check-ins, and meetings.
  • Access to a computer, reliable internet connectivity and ability to work remotely.
