Overview
Sahale Outdoors is seeking experienced and enthusiastic Seasonal Backpacking Guides to lead youth on multi-day wilderness trips throughout Washington State. Our backpacking programs take place in areas such as Olympic National Park, Mount Rainier National Park, the North Cascades, and other wild landscapes, where participants learn outdoor skills, teamwork, and leadership through immersive wilderness experiences.
Backpacking Guides serve as both trip leaders and mentors, helping youth build confidence, resilience, and a deeper connection to the natural world. Guides teach essential backcountry skills while creating a supportive environment where participants feel safe, challenged, and inspired.
This role is ideal for individuals passionate about outdoor leadership, youth development, and wilderness education.
Duties
- Lead Multi-Day Wilderness Trips
- Guide youth groups on backpacking expeditions ranging from 3–14 days
Teach Outdoor Skills
- Instruct participants in core backpacking skills including gear use, navigation, campcraft, food preparation, and wilderness safety
- Introduce Leave No Trace principles and responsible outdoor stewardship
- Help youth develop self-reliance and leadership in the outdoors
Mentor and Support Participants
- Foster a positive and inclusive group culture during extended trips
- Encourage teamwork, resilience, and personal growth through shared wilderness experiences
- Support participants from diverse backgrounds and experience levels
Ensure Safety and Risk Management
- Maintain awareness of environmental conditions, group health, and potential hazards
- Respond appropriately to emergencies and administer first aid if necessary
- Follow Sahale Outdoors safety protocols and wilderness risk management procedures
Prepare and Maintain Trip Logistics
- Assist with gear preparation, food packing, and trip planning prior to departure
- Ensure group gear is properly maintained and accounted for
- Complete trip documentation and incident reports when necessary
Qualifications:
- Experience leading or assisting with multi-day backpacking trips
- Strong outdoor skills including navigation, campcraft, and backcountry travel
- Experience working with youth in outdoor or educational settings preferred
- Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification
- Ability to carry a backpack weighing 30–40 lbs and travel long distances on rugged terrain
- Strong leadership, communication, and teamwork skills
- Comfort working in remote environments and varying weather conditions

Pay: $175.00 - $225.00 per day

Work Location: In person
