We are seeking a Senior Staff – Accounting, Tax & Payroll to support our expanding tax, payroll, and accounting operations during peak season. This contract role may lead to long-term or full-time opportunities and is ideal for someone seeking broad, résumé-building exposure beyond traditional tax compliance and transactional bookkeeping – including advisory, finance operations support, and consulting experience seldom available in small firm environments.
Type: Contract – 6 Months (Seasonal); Opportunity for Long-Term Extension/Full-Time
Location: Hybrid (Canton) initially; Remote with Availability
Position Summary
The Senior Staff – Accounting, Tax & Payroll plays a critical role across SUIG’s Tax and Accounting & Finance Operations (AFO) services. This individual will lead simple-to-moderate complexity individual and small-business tax preparation, biweekly payroll processing, quarterly/annual payroll filings, 1099 oversight, and accounting review. Beyond accurate tax preparation and payroll compliance, this role supports financial analysis, month-end processes, workpaper preparation, system cleanup, cash flow insights, and operational discipline needed for scaling businesses.
This role is ideal for a senior-level, high-accuracy professional who can work independently to execute compliance and operate in a dynamic, advisory-oriented environment. Experience with Drake, QuickBooks Online (QBO), and MS 365 business tools is required. This role offers a flexible, part-time or seasonal schedule and can also be ideal for an experienced professional seeking part-time work or just during tax season.
Key Responsibilities
Tax & Payroll (Core Competencies)
- Prepare Individual & Business (Schedule C, Schedule E, 1065, 1120, 1120-S, 990) returns using Drake.
- Translate financial data into tax-ready workpapers with clear logic and documentation.
- Manage biweekly payroll and ensure accurate quarterly/annual payroll tax filings.
- Lead year-end 1099-NEC/MISC preparation and vendor reconciliation.
Accounting & Finance Operations (AFO Support)
- Support month-end close tasks: reconciliations, JE preparation, accruals, and variance analysis.
- Strengthen financial accuracy by identifying misclassifications, inconsistencies, or control gaps.
- Assist with system cleanup and optimization in QBO, helping clients move from transactional bookkeeping to CFO-ready reporting.
- Prepare structured workpapers and schedules that align with SUIG’s finance-ops standards.
- Convert transactional data into insights that support cash flow visibility, margin analysis, or operational improvements.
Internal Quality
- Maintain high-quality documentation that reduces rework and supports scaling processes.
- Operate independently while escalating issues proactively.
- Communicate effectively, with a focus on clarity and client service.
- Use Microsoft 365, QBO, Drake, and SUIG processes and templates with precision and consistency.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards
Qualifications
Education & Credentials
- 4–7+ years of related experience.
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- Demonstrated aptitude for accounting, financial statements, financial analysis, and systems thinking.
- CPA, EA, or active candidate a plus.
- Background in public accounting preferred
Technical Skills
- Required proficiency in Drake Tax, QuickBooks Online, and Microsoft 365 (Excel, Outlook, Teams, OneDrive).
- Ability to prepare structured workpapers that support both tax and accounting & finance ops.
- Strong understanding of federal and state payroll laws, compliance cycles multi-state employment tax considerations.
Professional Skills
- High attention to detail and strong analytical skills; able to interpret financial data beyond compliance needs.
- Ability to work independently and in a team, while escalating issues proactively.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple deadlines during peak season.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for client and internal interactions; ability to simplify tax/accounting topics for clients.
- High accuracy, judgment, and confidentiality standards.
- Operates with ownership, urgency, and professionalism.
