Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)

Position

Our Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner is a contracted position reporting to the Children’s Advocacy Center Program Director, or in absence of the Program Director, the CAN Council CEO.

Program Implementation Responsibilities

  • Promoting and completing acute and non-acute forensic exams for victims of sexual and/or physical child abuse
  • Testifying in court regarding forensic findings from exams as needed
  • Oversee/audit the training and continuing education of Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE-P and SANE-P trained)
  • Providing technical assistance and training as needed to members of the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) and community stakeholders
  • Ensure compliance with the National Children’s Alliance Medical Evaluation standards
  • Maintain up-to-date file information for all nurse licensure, liability insurance, initial and ongoing training, etc.
  • Attend Case Review meetings so as to provide medical perspective to other professionals involved
  • Maintain inventory of supplies (including rape kits, charts, patient hand-outs, batteries, laundry, etc.)
  • Update equipment and assist in purchasing proper equipment needed for medical exams at the Children’s Advocacy Center
  • Maintain and update Clinical Lab Log
  • Serve as a liaison for the program with MDT members (law enforcement, prosecuting attorneys, victim advocates, mental health providers, other medical providers, hospitals, etc.) and local universities, other SANE programs, etc.
  • Collect and maintain data regarding SART/SANE activity (this data may be needed for grant reporting, internal SANE/SART program training, funders, and intermittent data requests from other collaborating agencies)

Qualifications

  • Certified SANE-P nurse or SANE-P trained nurse in accordance with state law and the International Association of Forensic Nurses
  • Current nurse licensure with the state of Michigan
  • Maintain necessary annual CEU requirement
  • Public speaking and training skills
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national policies and laws related to the Children’s Advocacy Center medical examinations
  • Maintain liability and malpractice insurance coverage at required amounts
  • Available on-call after normal business hours and on weekends
  • Annual satisfactory background check clearance required.

Request for reimbursement for SANE training will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
