Job Overview: The Pennsylvania Rural Water Association is hiring a new Source Water Protection Specialist. This candidate will join the current Source Water Protection Team with the goal of assisting Pennsylvania’s drinking water systems with the development of comprehensive plans that guide them in the protection of their ground and surface water sources.

Responsibilities: The program exists to further awareness and protection of community drinking water sources from contamination. The candidate will work independently and within a team to contact and develop relationships with the owners and operators of small community water systems to achieve these goals. The primary focus of this outreach is the development of comprehensive plans with resources that a drinking water system can use to implement source water protection measures. Development of a typical plan will involve visits to the site to inventory risks to the system’s water sources and coordination with a hydrogeologist to determine critical protection areas. Upon completion, plans are reviewed and distributed to the system’s owners, managers, and operators. The Specialist will also assist in developing meaningful management strategies for systems like best management practices, public education, and collaboration with organizations working toward similar water quality goals.

Experience Preferences: A general knowledge of watersheds, groundwater, wells, distribution systems, treatment, and current drinking water regulations is required. An associate or bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred, but similar professional experience or certifications such as water or wastewater operations is encouraged and considered towards equivalence. Proficiency in developing and maintaining professional communication and relationships is necessary. The candidate must be able to operate Microsoft 365 Suite programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams. Experience with ArcGIS is preferred. Report writing competency is required.
