Staff Accountant
J.E. Richards, Inc. is a leading electrical contractor serving commercial, industrial, data center, utility, and service markets across the Mid-Atlantic. As part of the Phalcon family of companies, we support complex infrastructure projects while maintaining a strong focus on operational excellence, financial discipline, and long-term growth.
As we continue to expand, we are seeking a Staff Accountant to join our Accounting team and support the day-to-day financial operations of the business.
Position Overview
The Staff Accountant plays a key role in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the company's financial records. Reporting to the Controller, this position supports month-end close, general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, fixed asset accounting, tax compliance, and financial reporting activities.
This role is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys owning core accounting functions, solving problems, improving processes, and working within a growing organization. While experience in construction is beneficial, we are open to candidates from a variety of industries with strong corporate accounting fundamentals.
What You'll Do
General Ledger & Month-End Close
- Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and account adjustments
- Assist with monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts
- Perform balance sheet reconciliations and investigate discrepancies
- Support preparation of internal financial reports and schedules
Accounting Operations
- Maintain fixed asset records, depreciation schedules, and related accounting
- Monitor and analyze operating expenses and account activity
- Assist with intercompany accounting and reconciliations
- Support cash management and related accounting activities
- Ensure accounting records are complete, accurate, and timely
Tax & Compliance
- Assist with sales and use tax filings
- Support state and local tax reporting requirements
- Prepare documentation and schedules for audits and external reviews
- Ensure compliance with accounting policies and internal controls
Systems & Process Improvement
- Utilize ERP and accounting systems to maintain accurate financial records
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and reporting efficiency
- Assist with special projects and process improvement initiatives
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Three or more years of accounting experience
- Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and financial reporting
- Experience with month-end close, journal entries, and reconciliations
- Experience with fixed asset accounting and account analysis
- Exposure to sales and use tax, state tax reporting, or related compliance activities
- Strong Excel skills including pivot tables, lookups, and data analysis
- Experience with ERP systems and accounting software
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Construction, engineering, manufacturing, distribution, or service industry experience
- Experience with Vista by Viewpoint or similar ERP systems
- Experience in multi-entity organizations
- Experience supporting external audits
Required Experience
- General Ledger Accounting: 3+ years
- Month-End Close: 3+ years
- Account Reconciliations: 3+ years
Preferred
- Construction industry experience
- ERP experience (Vista preferred)
