Staff Accountant
Full job description
Zion Baptist Church is seeking a Staff Accountant. This position is responsible for supporting accurate, up-to-date financial and contribution records for the church and its related ministries. This position ensures that financial transactions are recorded timely, accurately, and in compliance with generally accepted auditing standards and policies and procedures implemented by the church’s Board of Directors.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge base:
- Proficient keying skills with a high level of accuracy.
- Attention to details is highly important, and the ability to self-correct when necessary.
- Demonstrate proficiency in online banking and push-pay web portals.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Suite - Word, Advanced Excel, Outlook
- Church accounting software, ACS Technologies (Realm), is a huge plus
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and non-profit accounting principles.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Daily/Weekly:
- Full-charge A/P functions; from check requests and invoice input to check generation and distribution.
- Maintain cash-basis books for the unrestricted, temporarily restricted, and permanently restricted funds of the church.
- Update giving database as indicated on envelopes or by donor request.
- Download and post contributions from the online giving portal.
- Prepare weekly contributions reporting to church leadership team.
- Adhoc reporting as required by the Church Administrator
Monthly/Semi-Monthly:
- Prepare monthly and semi-monthly payroll through third-party payroll processing company.
- Maintain employee records for PTO hours.
- Make timely payroll tax deposits.
- Prepare necessary payroll adjustments prior to year-end for W2s.
- Post and reconcile credit card fee transactions timely.
- Enter journal adjustments as assigned/requested by church financial officers.
Quarterly:
- Reconcile member giving statements.
- Adhoc reporting as assigned/requested.
Annually:
- Prepare IRS Form 1099 for prior tax year; deadline January 31st.
- Assist with the annual operating budget starting Sep-Nov for next calendar year.
- Provide assistance with documentation for the Church and Academy' s annual audit.
- Manage year-end donor statements for tax preparation.
- Manage pledge receivables and reporting when applicable.
- Assist with all operational, federal, state, and county audits and/or reviews.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Keep current on accounting system training.
- Troubleshoot accounting issues and reconcile them as necessary.
- Answer member questions regarding their giving.
- Keep current on church financial accounting procedures.
- Complete other tasks as directed by the Church Administrator.
Education & Experience:
- Five to ten years’ experience working in accounting operations. Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is preferred. Working with fund accounting or with non-profit accounting, is a plus.
