Summary

The Steamfitting Curriculum Coordinator + Lead Instructor position manages all aspects of curriculum for training and continuing education programs. This includes review, on-going development and maintenance of curriculum, hands-on training equipment, managing assets and other program needs as identified. The Curriculum Coordinator also manages the team of Full-time Instructors and Subject Matter Experts (“SME”)

Reports to: Steamfitting Program Coordinators

Direct Reports: Full-time Instructors

Status: Full-time, Hourly, Non-exempt, At-will, non-represented

Pay and benefits: $2,892.40 weekly, approximately $150,405.80 annually + Benefits + Local, National, and Officers Pensions

About

Our Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee’s (JATC) primary mission is to train highly qualified, skilled, and marketable Plumbers, Steamfitters, and HVAC/R technicians for our industry. We are dedicated to developing professionals who bring expertise, character, and a sense of teamwork to the clients we service, the contractors who employ us and the union we represent.

Key Initiatives - first 90 days

  • Prepare for the coming year by reviewing and understanding current curriculum, reading books, materials, tests, and practice teaching
  • Meets with and develops management plan for Full-time Instructors in their program
  • Become proficient with technology used at the Training Center
  • Review currently planned classes and identify updates that need to be made
  • Review list of curriculum, labs, and hands-on training equipment (“trainers”) needing to be developed or built and set project goals and priorities
  • Ensure all assets and materials are available for 1 week classes in the Fall
  • Review and understand content of weekly assessments and yearly evaluations
  • Identify gaps in curriculum and other program goals and needs
  • Become familiar with the rules, standards, policies, and protocols included in the Apprentice and Employee Training Center handbooks and BOLI curriculum standards
  • Become familiar with the COE requirements
  • Become familiar with the licensing and certification requirements of the curriculum
  • Complete the onboarding process

Activities

  • Management, Leadership, and Instruction
  • Meet regularly with Program Coordinators
  • Have one on one meetings with Direct Reports twice per month, track agendas, action items and accomplishments
  • Coordinate Subject Matter Experts (“SME”)
  • Act as a substitute as needed for Full-time block training classes in cases of emergency and when other substitutes are not available
  • Ensure all materials and tools needed are available and organized by the Full-time Instructors prior to classes so that classes will run smoothly and efficiently
  • Supervise the manage the work and performance of the Full-time instructors in assigned trade discipline, or as generalists
  • Develop expectations and manage the continual development the Full-time Instructors
  • Meet regularly with Full-time Instructors to review new curriculum, determine development opportunities for them and the program
  • Lead morning meeting for instructors beginning at 6:30AM every working day.
  • Audit classes for review and COE compliance
  • Monitor instructor grade sheets of each class to ensure grades are accurate
  • Curriculum Management
  • Develop and create curriculum and hands-on projects for classes related to curriculum
  • Collaborate with other coordinators, instructors, to improve curriculum, labs and trainers for all programs and special classes
  • Manage the maintenance of the trainers and labs, and collaborate with appropriate parties to repair, update, or develop new trainers and labs
  • Attend relevant training courses and seminars
  • Administration
  • Manage the maintenance of course syllabi with curriculum updates and ensure supportive materials and assets are updated
  • Submit required documentation for COE
  • Understanding of licensing and certification requirements
  • Manage the reporting of materials usage, including tracking for inventory and budget management
  • Manage ordering and procurement of inventory
  • Support
  • Mentor students who are struggling with the curriculum, refer students who need assistance with leaves of absence or accommodations to Human Resources
  • Other Duties and Activities will be assigned or updated as needed

Experience

Required Certifications, Licenses, Education and Skills:

  • Required License and Certifications per trade;
  • LEB (HVAC/R) (OR)
  • Plumbing License (OR)
  • Class 5 Boiler License (Steamfitting or HVAC/R)
  • Current UA Certifications (Steamfitting)
  • 5 + years' experience as a Journeyworker or higher in their trade, or equivalent experience instructing for the same or similar apprenticeship program
  • 1 + experience supervising and managing a team in the field as a foreman or general foreman
  • Proficiency with of Office 365 programs, including Excel, Outlook, Word, Forms, PowerPoint, Blue Beam, and others
  • Proficiency with other technology tools, including Teams and Zoom
  • Experience and comfort using iPads
  • Any other certifications necessary to instruct with authority and to maintain compliance

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience leading a complex project
  • 10+ years' experience as a Journeyworker in the field, or equivalent experience instructing for the same or similar apprenticeship program
  • 1+ years as a current or former instructor in the same or similar apprenticeship program
  • ITP Instructor Certification Classes
  • Associate's degree or other professional certification related to the trade

The following work activities will be preferred and helpful:

  • Curriculum development work experience
  • Project Management experience is helpful
  • Experience working as an instructor in a similar environment

Industry Knowledge that will be helpful:

  • Understanding of trade apprenticeship and on-the-job training programs
  • Advanced knowledge of licensing and certification requirements

Environment

This position is on site, and is a mix of seated work at a computer, walking, bending, and using tools, climbing ladders, work at floor level and above, sometimes on knees and other positions in the course of building trainers, climbing, pulling, occasionally driving long distances, occasionally using a forklift, and regularly using vision to inspect work product. Regularly lifting up to 50 lbs. Walking and climbing stairs is sometimes required.

Travel

There are six (6) training centers in Oregon and one (1) in California, with a future site planned to be opened in Washington. Some travel to satellite locations may be required sometimes.
