Job Title: Summer Camp Counselor

Work Location: St. Francisville, LA - Camp Marydale

Reports To: Girl Experience Camp Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Supervises: None

Work Schedule: Days and overnight, Sunday thru Friday with occasional Saturdays

Status: Part-Time Temporary (May 21 - July 23, 2023)

Pay: $350 per week plus food and lodging.

This position is responsible for supervising campers and keeping them safe while teaching children and teenagers outdoor and recreational skills, overseeing and planning camp activities and learning and implementing emergency protocol efforts to ensure the protection of campers.


Age: 18 years or older

Education- High school diploma or GED equivalent required.

Work Experience-

  • Minimum 2 years of experience with camp activities such as horseback riding, canoeing and other outdoor camp activities.
  • The desire and ability to work with children in an outdoor, overnight camp setting.


  • Must possess CPR and FA certifications or have the ability to obtain quickly.

  • Ability to evaluate and assess situations, develop next steps and resolve issues in a calm and professional manner, take direction and effectively collaborate

Other Considerations-

  • Personal membership in GSUSA is required
  • May require evening and weekend work.

JOB FUNCTIONS: Essential Duties and Responsibilities-

  • Plans and leads activities such as arts, crafts, sports, games, camping, and hobbies.
  • Enforces camp rules and regulations and ensures safety in the recreational facilities.
  • Performs first aid following prescribed procedures and contacts emergency medical personnel when required by the situation.
  • Demonstrates use of recreational equipment and teaches participants the principles, techniques, and safety procedures for each activity.
  • Greets new arrivals and introduces them to other campers; explains camp and facility rules.
  • Reports camper complaints to leadership and works to resolve issues.
  • Learn about the campers in the unit each week and understand their likes and dislikes.
  • Provide opportunities for the group so that each individual experiences success during their camp session.
  • Provide opportunities for discussion of individual or group problems or concerns.
  • Help each participant meet the goals established by the camp for camper development.
  • Guide unit groups and individual campers in participating successfully in all aspects of camp activities.
  • Carry out established and assigned roles for supervising camper health.
  • Carry out established roles in enforcing camp safety regulations and emergency procedures.
  • Develop Cabin or unit activity plans with participants as appropriate.
  • Supervise all assigned aspects of the campers’ day including morning and nighttime routines, cabin clean up, mealtimes, rest times, and activities.
  • Instruct campers in emergency procedures such as fire drills, evacuating the cabin, etc.
  • Help campers plan their participation in unit-wide or camp-wide programs, special events, and activities.
  • Assist in teaching or leading activities as assigned.
  • Prepare for and actively participate in staff training, meetings, and supervisory conferences.
  • Set a good example for camper and others including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing, clean up and chores, sportsmanship, and table manners.
  • Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment and facilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical and Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:

  • Communicate effectively.
  • Moderate levels of standing, walking, use hands to finger motions, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, Climb on the horse's back.
  • Sitting while horse-back riding may extend up to four (4) hours with breaks available as needed.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move heavy items up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Must be able to physically participate in games, sports, and physical activities including water-based games and activities and maintain attention and high level of energy or excitement for extended periods of time.

The work environment is considered to be that of an outdoor facility involving horse(s) that may become frightened or aggressive in unpredictable moments. Horse(s) may attempt to kick, bite or injure their handler(s).

The work environment also consists of exposure to seasonal weather and outside weather conditions including extreme heat and humidity. Must be able to spend majority the of time outdoors and tolerate a variety of weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is typical of that associated with outdoor youth camp activities.
