Position Overview
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Thermal Coating Plasma Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will specialize in the application of advanced thermal spray coatings using plasma technology to enhance the performance, durability, and reliability of components across various industries, such as aerospace, automotive, energy, and manufacturing. The role demands a strong understanding of plasma spray processes, materials science, and quality assurance practices.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Thermal Coating Application:
- Operate and maintain plasma spray equipment to apply coatings on metal, ceramic, or composite substrates.
- Develop and optimize thermal spray parameters for different materials and applications.
- Ensure uniform coating thickness, adhesion, and surface finish according to specifications.
- Identify applications and potential customers for Plasma Spray coatings.
Process Development and Optimization:
- Conduct research and development to improve existing coating processes.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to customize coatings for specific applications.
- Design experiments to test new coating materials or techniques and analyze results.
Material Science and Selection:
- Evaluate substrate materials and recommend suitable coatings to enhance wear, corrosion, heat resistance, or other desired properties.
- Prepare samples for outside lab diagnostics.
Quality Assurance and Compliance:
- Perform regular inspections and testing to ensure coatings meet industry standards (e.g., ISO, ASTM).
- Document process parameters, inspection results, and any deviations in detailed technical reports.
- Troubleshoot and resolve defects or inconsistencies in the coating process.
Equipment Maintenance and Safety:
- Maintain and calibrate thermal spray equipment to ensure optimal performance and compliance with safety regulations.
- Train team members on equipment operation and safety protocols.
- Stay up-to-date with advancements in thermal spray technologies and implement improvements.
Skills and Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, or a related field. Advanced degrees are a plus.
Experience:
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience in plasma spray or thermal coating applications.
- Hands-on expertise with thermal spray systems, such as APS (Atmospheric Plasma Spray).
Skills:
- Proficiency in interpreting technical drawings and coating specifications.
- Knowledge of heat transfer, surface preparation techniques, and coating diagnostics.
- Familiarity with tools like SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), XRD (X-Ray Diffraction), or profilometers.
Other Requirements:
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Willingness to work in a production environment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Preferred:
- AWS, CWS, or other relevant certifications in thermal spray technology.
- Training in Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma methodologies.
Work Environment:
This role typically involves working in an industrial setting with exposure to high-temperature equipment, noise, and particulate matter. Proper protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to safety guidelines are required.
