Job Description
The Maui Humane Society's mission is: “To protect and save the lives of Maui's animals; accepting all in need, educating the community, and inspiring respect and compassion towards all animals.”
Primary Purpose:
The Veterinary Animal Care & Enrichment Specialist will provide assistance to the MHS Veterinary team with routine medical needs and husbandry for all animals sheltered at the Maui Humane Society with a focus on those under medical observation.
Essential Duties/Functions:
- Provides routine and minor health care for animals housed at the shelter. Administer daily treatments to animals at the shelter. This may include observing the progress of the animals, bringing concerns to the attention of the veterinarian, clinic manager or lead veterinary technician and documenting findings and treatments prescribed.
- Clean and disinfect hospital animal habitats, including food, water bowls, and litterboxes.
- Provide food, water, daily exercise and enrichment to hospitalized patients as approved by senior veterinary team members.
- Assisting the veterinary team with animal examinations and check ins. Includes being able to provide proper restraint, running tests, drawing up medications and entering all necessary information into the shelter software system after the examination is completed.
- Assists with the supply inventory and should have a general knowledge of where supplies are located and their general indications for use. Assists in keeping all veterinary facilities cleaned and stocked with necessary drugs and supplies.
- Maintains cleanliness in all workstations including sweeping, mopping, restocking and laundry.
- Must safely perform proper restraint and handling of all animals that are received at the shelter. This will include restraint for examinations, intravenous shots and other procedures. At times this may involve the handling of difficult animals and feral animals.
- Assist with medical equipment maintenance as needed.
- Interact with team members and volunteers in an efficient and courteous manner toensure a cooperative team environment.
- Maintain and promote a positive public image standard relevant to MHS.
- Attend and participate in departmental and shelter meetings. Attend educationalvenues as recommended/approved.
- Address and/or report any safety hazards or unsafe use of MHS equipment.
- Other duties as assigned by the veterinary team.
Working Conditions: air conditioned clinic and exams areas and outdoors.
Equipment Used: Various cleaning tools and solutions. Computer, phone, cell phone, printer, fax, copier and other office equipment. Surgical equipment including anesthetic machines, medical equipment and supplies including prescription and restricted drugs. Animal care and restraint equipment such as loop sticks, bites sticks, and traps.
Working Hours: Various shifts within hours of operation seven days a week. Number of hours and regular shift availability will be clarified at hire and may be subject to change. The position requires regular and predictable attendance. MHS is open Monday to Saturday year round and all but 5 holidays (occasionally closed Sundays due to staffing). Individual schedules vary but employees should be available and willing to fill in on an emergency basis on other days including holidays.
Mental Demands: Requires the ability to multi-task and have a high degree of alertness and attention to detail. Ability to read and write in English and follow written and oral communications. Must be a team player and work closely with other staff members in a positive and helpful manner. This position requires good organizational skills, good communication skills and the ability to multitask. Requires emotional capacity to handle being exposed to euthanasia related conversations. Requires exceptional attention to detail, courteous and professional demeanor, frequent interaction with staff and public.
Physical Demands Requires the ability to be physically active during the entire shift. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and be able to hold and restrain animals of all sizes. . The majority of duties will require the veterinary assistant to be on their feet. Should be able to handle animals of various sizes and temperaments and have adequate reflexes to deal with shy, fearful or potentially aggressive animals. Must be able to work at a fast and efficient pace while maintaining safety and health standards for both the workers and the animals.

Minimum Qualifications:
- General knowledge of animal behavior.
- Attention to detail, ability to multitask.
- Demonstrate ability to care for animals in a safe and nurturing capacity.
General Qualifications:
- Must have a passion for animals and support the mission of the Maui Humane Society.
- Must treat animals humanely, with love and concern both on and off the job, and transmit these values to others.
- Must adhere to all local laws regarding personally owned animals
- General knowledge of pet behavior and care. Ability to work with all kinds of animals in a safe and responsible manner.
- Positive attitude a must!
Additional Qualifications that would benefit this position:
- Previous experience in animal related field preferably with animal or veterinary care
- Previous animal welfare experience
- Fear Free Shelter Certification (This can be attained post hire.)
